Hi....

I have a gertboard coming for xmas from my lovely wife.

I plan on building it over christmas.

Coudl anyone recommend the temperate I should set my soldering iron to please?

I'll be using 60/40 tin/lead roson core

No more than 400C - in my experience.

To a certain extent, it will depend on the size of your bit, thinner ones needing a higher temperature (the sensor is at the other end of the bit, and you've got to allow for a drop down the length, as well as the thermal capacity being lower ...)

And I'm expecting more people to chime in here with different ideas.

Heres my 2 bit's worth (see what I did there?)

For more years soldering than I care to admit to, a Weller TCP 24 has done just about everything. I have a PT A A 7 bit, its pretty damned fine and set for 370C.

Money you spend on a good high power temperature controlled iron is money you will never* regret spending. Cheap tools are the biggest cause of problems with hobby electronics.

I usually solder at 350.

higher temps mean quicker melting but they also mean the solder left on the bit oxidises quicker and shorten tip life.
