LCD, keyboard and Wifi make Raspberry laptop

Sat Jul 28, 2018 10:43 pm

Whether connected to Wifi at vacation house, or to free German high speed train (free) Wifi, wireless Pi (with built in Wifi or dongle) makes a Raspberry laptop with (big enough, I use 1024x600 7") LCD and (wireless touch) keyboard:

If you ever drive on German high speed train ICE, you get (free wall power and) free Wifi by adding these lines to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf:

Code: Select all

network={
        ssid="WIFIonICE"
        key_mgmt=NONE
}

Re: LCD, keyboard and Wifi make Raspberry laptop

Last year I bought 7" Waveshare 1024x600 DPI display for use during 3 week vacation in Denmark.
The display worked well, inclusive on train ride direction vacation.

I did not use the display for a year now, and it is time to make the PIs work with it again, for upcoming 3 week vacation.

Reason is that the Pi ZeroW I used on last year vacation died, and among the 7 working Pi Zero[W]s I own only one has male headers.
The Pi 3B+ that was in Denmark last year has severe SD card issues and needs to be reflashed.

So in order to see whether display still works I appended this to Raspberry 2B+ (that had never seen the 7" display) /boot/config.txt and rebooted:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ tail -8 /boot/config.txt

dtoverlay=dpi24
enable_dpi_lcd=1
display_default_lcd=1
dpi_group=2
dpi_mode=87
dpi_output_format=0x6f005
hdmi_cvt 1024 600 60 6 0 0 0
[email protected]:~ $

Worked like a charm.
Next to enable are Pi Zero, Pi 3B and Pi 3A+ (will use Dremel to cut hole for display cable into the case, as I did for camera cable):

P.S:
I would have to Dremel away too much from case cover for RGB LCD hat to get cover closed ‒ will use case without cover during upcoming vacation:
