That's the one mentioned above - it's in pre-order (Aug 24 ETA)

Ah yes. Bit of a strange place to put that message (just below the bottom edge of my scree  )

I was talking about the buyapi.ca page. I could just see 'Description' at the bottom of my screen and did not expect essential availability information there

Today's raspberrypi-kernel update is needed to get the drivers for the POE HAT.

Obviously the POE part is not dependant on the firmware or kernel in any way, but the latest update makes the fan work.

My POE pi hat arrived this morning, working like a charm but for such a small fan it makes quite a racket
is their any way to change the fans operating range ?

Yes, you have full flexibility here. What behaviour do you want from it?

When the fan first starts there seems to be a bit of a grating sound, this settles down after initial spin up of the fan, so im hoping i can have the fan run on its lowest setting to avoid the constant start stop cycle.
my pi temp is between 44.5 and 45.1. seems to kick on at 45 degrees, so every few seconds it starts, spins for a few seconds and stops. its not excessively loud, but its quite close to me.
I might make a longer cat 5e cable and hide it in a cupboard somewhere,

Would you like it to just constantly have the same slow speed and not adjust according to CPU temperature.

Having a constant slow speed seems like it might be a good option to try.

I don't have it here, so I'm going off memory. There may be some mistakes.

in /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/ you should see a file named 'def_pwm'. That contains the default PWM value that's loaded as soon at the HAT gets power.

Write a '50' into there with "echo 50 | sudo tee /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/def_pwm".

Next, stop the kernel from taking over control of the fan by putting "disable_poe_fan=1" into config.txt. Shut down, remove power, power back on, and it should be at a constant slow speed.

When I am back in the office, I can give instructions on how to adjust what happens and at which temperatures.

Done...
fan is now running at a constant speed, can i assume that the value 50 is a percentage :?:

also, thanks for your help and quick replies :D

50 is the PWM value, out of 255.

Hello!

I received my Pi 3B+ PoE HAT for 2 of my Pi's from RS yesterday, installed fine, turned on, updated the OS to get the latest Kernel, did a cold boot, and everything is going fine powering them from my Switch. Fan is on and off quite often...but that's fine.

However...

2 issues I have noticed.

1) On my first Pi. I have a small USB 3-based hard drive, just a small portable one, and that is the only thing plugged in. For some reason, the Pi just doesn't appear to be giving it stable enough power, as that drive keeps constantly disconnecting and reconnecting (I hear it clicking on and off all the time). It powers up, only to power back down 5 seconds later. So that all it does. I have tried the same with a simple, low power USB flash drive, and that too just constantly connects and reconnects; its LED just keeps flickering.

2) On my second Pi. For some reason, the Pi's red power LED sometimes goes off for about 6 seconds , the comes back on again where it will be okay for a few minutes, and then it'll go off again. It looks like the HAT is still being powered at this point, just my Pi board loses power.

I was running both Pi's on their officlal 5V 2.4A power supplies before I got the PoE HAT, and these problems have started since I got the HAT! It's worth noting that these are brand new Pi's with their official PoE HAT now attached to them; there's nothing else connected.

So I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing what I'm seeing with the red power LED turning off, or having issues with USB devices not getting enough power when using the PoE HAT?

Thanks.

According to specification the PoE HAT should provide 5V 2.5A

PoE Injector not supply enough power ??

I haven't seen any issues while I was working on the software, but I haven't tried connecting any power hungry devices. It has been pretty solid in my experience.

i have just plugged a spare 2.5 inch drive into my pi via a usb 3 sata adapter, seems ok so far.
i supply power to my poe hat/pi via a cisco sg300mpp which supports af and at poe standards.
with the drive attached, im drawing 4.5 watts but this is at idle. this increased to 8.3 under a short load test to stress the cpu
what switch are you using to power your hat.

Hmmm...weird!

I am using a Ubiquiti US-16 switch to provide power (set to PoE+ on both ports).

Those 2 issues I mentioned earlier happen on separate Pi's - they do not exhibit the symptoms of the other. I tried connecting the Switch to a splitter, and then using that to power the Pi via micro-USB - just in case the Switch was the issue - and the power to the Pi's was fine.

On the Pi where I see the board's power LED go off for a few seconds and then comes on again, it is worth mentioning that the board does not lose power completely as the Pi does not cold boot afterwards, and sometimes the SD Card Green LED is on when the Power LED goes off. I have been hawking the voltages and current readouts on my switch when this happens, and I see little-to-no loss in readings. But at the same time, it does struggle to keep USB thing powered!

Maybe the Hat's I received are just dodgy ones?!

i would try different rj45 leads, maybe a bad lead.
also try contact cleaner on raspberry pi header pins(turn of pi first :D ), maybe a contact issue if other hats have been on, loose or dirty pins maybe :?:

Cable-wise, I am using 1M Belkin Cat6 STP cables, I have tried a few and unfortunately the Pi does the same :(

I will however try ordering some contact cleaner, and see if it that helps.

So apart from that, I am out of ideas as to why my Pi's are currently hating their Hats!

Just for completeness, does anyone have good recommendations as to what to use as "the other end" - i.e., as the Power Injector side of it?

have you tried swapping the hats on the pi's to see if the problem follows the hat ?

seems a bit strange to get 2 duff poe hats at the same time.

dont know much about the poe settings of the ubiquity switch, is there any other options in the advanced section for poe ?
on my switch the hat registers as a class 3 device, poe+ is class 4, not sure if that makes a difference or not, maybe its not detecting it correctly.
im pretty much out of ideas too

Have you run sudo apt update && sudo apt -y dist-upgrade to ensure you have the latest stable kernel and bootcode (which is required for the POE HAT)?
