Long-range WIFI dongle reccomendation

There are some cheap (4$) USB Wifi Dongles out on eBay Ralink rt2800usb RT5370 chipped.
for 6$ there is also a version available with a RP-SMA Connector, where you can add your bigger antenna...

While this will work, in many cases it makes the equipment illegal, as it is not the system that was tested and received type approval. In the UK this is the case anyway.

Just curious what do you define long range

while a small usb adapter won't have much range

An ultimate would be a cantenna which is strictly directional just need the right connector on a usb card. But I guess is illegal in UK

If cabling is an option CAT5 can go pretty far so this is possible get the adapter closer to the signal. Not sure the antenna but larger device so more surface.

If I buy "Ralink rt2800usb RT5370" wifi adapter I will not have to use the Occidentalis v0.2 (Adafruit Raspberry Pi Educational Linux Distro) to be able to use a Wifi adapter? I believe this Distro is for Wifi adapters with RTL8192cu chip-set.

I have that same dongle and it works perfectly fine in the Raspbian image.
