Redbear wifi PHat anyone care to share like/love/hate?

Fri Dec 30, 2016 12:49 am

Finally made the 82 mile trip to Microcenter to get a Pi Zero for my collection (anyone know if the qty limit will ever get lifted?). Looking at the Redbear PHat for it and was wondering if anyone could share how it works for them?

DougieLawson, your opinion would be appreciated ;)

It's currently sitting on my RPi2B and chugging away nicely. It's the same BT/WiFi chip as the RPi3 so it "just worked" with no software changes needed, no drivers, no firmware (it's all built-in).

The hardest part was getting that antenna connector fitted to the board.

Probably replied to the wrong thread.

The hardest part seems to be the soldering skill required for the 40 Pin Connector for this to work. The HubPiWi Blue will not require the 40 Pin Connector - but then you need to update the kernel - which could be pain again.

I have one of the early ones, and it's got a slightly iffy firmware that needs quite a bit of effort to update. So it sulks in the box.

Mine works OK, but of course has now been superseded by the PiZeroW. I am trying to use servoblaster on my PiZero, and the default setup causes constant interrupts that use over 95% of cpu time on irq/86-mmc1. Managed to stop the service (not quite sure how), and then a reboot got everything working. Need to set the used GPIO in servoblaster so it doesn't upset the PHAT when it starts up from initial boot.

To continue my previous post about the RedBear Wifi IOT PHAT, I got carried away with talking about incompatibility with servoblaster. I meant to say that I sent a message to the Redbear team early on regarding the fact that they only supplied the HAT with a standard 40 way socket. So when the unit is attached to the PiZero, there is no access to the i/o pins. I don't know if they changed what they are supplying now, because having no access is exactly what the PiZero is not about ;-) I bought a socket with extended pins from eBay so that I can put a Protoboard or individual wires on the pins sticking up above the IOT PHAT. It looks like this:

The pins sticking up at the top are for connections to a couple of servos and a laser pointer for the latest cat toy in production, once I get round the servoblaster problems.
