the Gertboard is a buffered IO board for the Raspberry Pi. It contains a variety of peripherals to designed to be used with the Pi, but some (the ATmega) can be used independantly. Analogue in and out, a motor controller, higher power buffers (open collector) and general buffered in/outs are avalable.

The Gertboard is probably best described as an IO development board.

It contains a number of useful components such as buffers, motor controller, darlington drivers and A/D, D/A convertors. These components can be connected to the Raspberry Pi GPIO connectors using jumpers. You can then connect the board to things like relays and motors so that they can be controlled using the raspberry Pi.

See the video http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/868

I would suggest that it is not really aimed at the complete beginner but I'm sure you will find help in the forums here. For the beginner I think the PiFace is probably more suitable, it is more limited in the options available but is basically plug-in and go.

My understanding is that the gertboard is packed with goodies that are initially unconnected but can be wired together via jumper leads between the many header pins.

My question is whether it would be possible to configure these connections to enable it to be used as a frequency counter that can be interigated by the Pi via a serial interface.

Hi,

The PiFace can be found at,
http://pi.cs.man.ac.uk/interface.htm

I do not have prices for either. Ordering a PiFace from outside the UK is problematic. Ordering a Gertboard is not possible, unless of course Gert has new information on this. Gordon has posted some more recent information on the Gertboard at,
https://projects.drogon.net/raspberry-pi/gertboard/

Regards,

Will
