3.5" Touch Screen TFT LCD RPi B+

Sat Apr 25, 2015 3:48 pm

I purchased a 3.5" Touch Screen Display TFT (320*480 pixel LCD) for Raspberry Pi B+ from eBay, just £19 delivered from a UK supplier, turned up promptly and works out of the box as described following the simple instructions which involved writing a pre-configured image of Raspbian to a card. So I am impressed so far!

However not been entirely content with using someone else's OS image from a security perspective (as I don't know the origin) I was wondering if anyone else had purchased one of these and had perhaps pursued finding and installing the drivers themselves onto Raspbian? I could not seem to find the drivers online and so wondered if anyone had tackled this already?

For reference this is the screen I have purchased:
Touch Screen Controller Model: XPT2046
URL: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321660128195? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Thank you for your time and help.

AFAIAA the Notro Drivers are included in the latest Raspbian release and support the XPT2046

Oh wow, that sounds great I can see the "XPT2046" listed on that page in a couple of places (despite the resolutions being slightly different I'm guessing it is the controller & software compatibility that counts). Any further pointers on how I make use of this code if it embedded in the latest release of Raspbian? Will there be an application that will provide easy access to enable drivers for possible LCD models or is it something I will need to enable / tweak configs on the shell for? (I don't mind doing that providing I know what I should be tweaking)

That Tft looks v similar to the adafruit pitft 3.5.

Have you tried their install instructions to see if they work with your screen?

Interesting thanks for the pointer there, I will look into that.

I have just dismanteled the screen from the Pi & Case and have noticed on the underside of the PCB in quite large writing it says:

3.5inch RPi LCD (A) V3
WaveShare
SpotPear

I'm not in a position to research this at the moment but will do when I next get the opportunity.

These displays are made by WaveShare. They are great but the correct modules for the touchscreen are hard to find. I found the link to their support site through a German forum. It has a download to a complete installation procedure for all their displays. Downloading is painfully slow but installing is a piece of cake (although installation time depends on the speed of your SD card). The procedures finishes itself with a reboot. Just wait for the reboot. Worked perfect for my 5" 800x480 display, the Notro module didn't operate correctly with that display. Hope this is the correct info.

I got this screen from Ebay , i know why you pay less now! Anyway the screen i got working fine, but i cann't get the touchscreen to work. The touch screen is an XPT2046 controller. I have tried the above downloaded the distro from waveshare but it didnt boot from the disk image (I am probably doing something stupid being a noob)

Has anyone got an idiots guide to getting this touchscreen working..

I had a similar problem installing the 5" display, pi was working fine then after running LCD5-show I kept getting
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2)
Found the problem was with the cmdline.txt file having the incorrect "root" device settings.

My original cmdline.txt was

Code: Select all

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=tty1 console=ttyAMA0,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk0p6 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait fbcon=map:10 fbcon=font:ProFont6x11 logo.nologo
However after running LCD5-show this changed to

Code: Select all

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=tty1 console=ttyAMA0,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait fbcon=map:10 fbcon=font:ProFont6x11 logo.nologo
After changing the boot partition from "2" back to "6" (on an Ubuntu laptop) it booted fine and the screen works.

So check your boot device in your original cmdline.txt then check the relevant LCDx-show script and make sure they agree.

https://github.com/swkim01/waveshare-dt ... verlay.dts is the overlay for waveshare 3.5", but I'm not sure if it's in the overlays provided as default. Check in the overlays folder of the boot partition. It also needs to be setup in a config file.

Hi guys I know this is an older thread now but I figured i'd update it with my experience with this screen. I got the screen at a discount so figured it would be a good screen to play around with for one of my other projects. After getting it all setup I realized that this screen is a knockoff from waveshare's screen and that caused a lot of confusion at first. So after a bit of time I got it all figured out and made a few videos of my experience so I figured i'd put them here for future explorers.. enjoy.
