Is it possible to power a RP4 with a powered usb hub

Sat Sep 19, 2020 9:42 pm

has anyone experience in using a powered usb hub to power a raspberry pi 4 and (in my case) two 2.5 inch usb hard drives or similar devices? I can not power them via the usb ports of the pi (not enough current), so I decided to buy an active usb hub. To reduce the amount of power supplies I thought it might be possible to plug the Pi into the hub as well.

Unfortunally I only found hubs that support max 2,4A per port (for example this one ... UTF8&psc=1) and the red port is according to the description for fast charging phones. Are special protocols required that only smartphones and similar devices support?

Usually a RP4 doesn´t need 3A all the time as provided by his psu.
So does anyone know if I can power a RP4 with a hub like this one to run NextcloudPi or will there be problems?

Thank you for your help

PS: I could try to combine two usb ports to get enough current. Any thoughts about this?

Try it!
Read and understand fully the manual before actually trying....(manual may be available online)
if it boots then you're good to go
if not, then you'll need to rethink

do note... your RPi4B can lie!

Oh, combining 2 ports is not a good idea.... and you might regret doing it....
