Lucky Bag of LCD and LED Displays

Fri Jun 27, 2014 5:30 pm

Hi guys!

A trip to Maplin resulted in a bargain, a couple of 7 segment displays (not pictured here), a few generic screens and the LCD from an oven for £3.99.

Unfortunately, I'm stumped on how I can wire these into the Pi's GPIOs, not having much electronic experience. The oven seems simple enough and the 7 segments I think I can do fine, but the other screens use a strange kind of ribbon cable, which I recognise as similar to those used in Casio calculator displays. Any advice on how I would go about this, (if it's possible with the Pi's electrical current restrictions) would be greatly appreciated. Also any clue on what to do with the two displays with no wires or ports in pic 6, they have a silver metal back if it helps.

EDIT: One of the ribbon cables looks like it could fit the Raspberry Pi's DSI port, although I read we're awaiting Broadcom drivers to be able to use this.

Unless you have complete datasheets for those displays you have a cat in hell's chance of getting them running on a RPi.

With some luck you might be able to get the segmented LED's working on the RPi.

With all the others there is no feasible way to get them working on a RPi. Your only hope of getting any use out of these is to put them in the product(s) they were designed for. Even then who knows if they are not broken somehow. There is a reason they were put in the bargain bin..........

The silver backed displays are missing the contact pad. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elastomeric_connector

You cannot assume that something with a similar looking connector will be compatible. There are hundreds of displays, many of which were designed for a single specific application or product.
Do not attempt to plug anything into the RPi DSI port that was not made for the RPi. You are likely to damage the RPi.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Thanks for your replies. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with these types of screen. I'll search a bit harder for datasheets (found links to foreign websites which might have something) and if I find anything I'll post back here.
