I solved (is it reasonable to call that "a solution" ?) it with the boot option which force USB 1.1.
But I have a second Raspberry Pi, with ArchLinux instead off Raspian Wheezy.

Everything seem perfect : it doesn't hang when I use USB serial adapter.

Can someone confirm the problem only exists on Raspian ?
What does
uname -a
report on each system? Probably one have a newer kernel, which has either fixed the problem or caused a new one.

Hello, I've tried the latest 16th December wheezy dist (as well as the previous 2 dist's) but still can't get a FT232BM to work with my version 2 Pi. They load up ok on startup & tell me the are on ttyUSB0 (I've got 2 & both fail the same way), but as soon as I try to set the transmission speed of ttyUSB0 with cuteCom - they hang the Pi. I know that there is an ongoing problem with the Pi & FTDI devices, but they are pretty well standard products & they work fine with Ubuntu & Windows.

So I feel that I have wasted an awful amount of time trying to get basic USB functionality to work with the Pi, so will now look for another solution to get wView working with my Davis Vantage Pro serial weather station - wView works fine with Win 7 & Ubuntu, but I want a diskless solution, any ideas?

Hello,

Iam also struggeling with the same problem. I could find a fix in the thread, is there already any?

Is there an older kernel I could install to make it work?

Hi

Im trying to get my LinkUSB adapter working properly with pi. Symptoms appear to be same as with previous posts eg. pi freezes within a few hours once i start to "ttyUSB" it. And the Manual tells me LinkUSB has a FT232R chip inside it.

I'd just like some info on how this issue is being dealt with - if possible :?:

It's being dealt with by someone looking at the problem and trying to debug it. gsh in fact. Although anyone is welcome to have a go at fixing it. All the source is available, and the USB Redux thread has some information people may find useful.

My setups been running for 6 days straight so far, making 2-3 requests per sec

Its the 256Mb model - Sept release

I have FTDI RS485-USB (FTDI - USB-RS485-WE-1800-BT) which has the FT232R chip

Code: Select all

Linux raspberrypi 3.2.27+ #250 PREEMPT Thu Oct 18 19:03:02 BST 2012 armv6l GNU/Linux
cmdline.txt (note usb 1.1 setting - dwc_otg.speed=1)

Code: Select all

Its running some solar panel monitoring software, making 2 -3 requests per sec. been running 6 days straight - no problem .

No hub, 2 usb adapters (wireless and the RS-485)

heres my lsusb

Hi all.
My contribution is:

With Raspbian "wheezy" (16 December) and RaspRazor distributions USB/RS232 cable with the FTDI chip:

- FT232BM/BL freezs the RPI when send serial data. Its is recognize by the system.
- FT232RL works perfectly.

Could be a simple tunning in the FTDI driver.

Best reagards,

Micos.

I will soon get a little kit for experiments with sensors that also uses an FTDI chip, so I'm interested in workarounds/solutions. Some people suggested forcing USB 1.1 via boot options, which is a bit drastic IMHO. I was wondering whether simply putting an old USB 1 hub between the device and the Raspi would also work?

Hello An update on my attempts to get my Davis Vantage Pro to work with wview on the version B Pi on the latest release: 2012-12-16-wheezy-raspbian

I had thought about giving up with the Pi as my 2 FTDI BL's froze the Pi on startup, I thought about other solutions for a diskless wview system but the Pi is very low cost isn't it, so worth another try. So I've just bought a new FTDI serial interface (Startech with the later RL chipset), wview runs ok for around 6 hours now & then the Pi hangs, I've looked in the Pi logs (Kernal & Sys logs) & there are masses of failures to read/write to SMSC95x 1-1.1:1.0 eth0 Register index 0x00000114/118. Any ideas?

Ran it succesfully for 11 days and now it hung.
Restarted it with same parameters in /boot/cmdline.txt :

dwc_otg.microframe_schedule=1 dwc_otg.speed=1 dwc_otg.fiq_fix_enable=1 dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tt
y1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait

Hoping for a permanent solution soon to come out.

Hi
Try with
FT232R : OK
FT245R: OK
FT2232M: OK
FT232BM: Fail as soon I open device
It's not related to ftdi_sio because I have the same problem with the ftdi2xx lib that use libusb.

and I think the smsc95xx chip just gets "out of order". Failed to write error is raised in Line 762 of the smsc95xx Driver File https://android.googlesource.com/kernel ... smsc95xx.c and the error code "110" is returned by usb_control_msg() and the error string is ETIMEDOUT. I'm new to Linux, but for me this lookes like the usb_control_msg() cant find the smsc9xx chip. Now I ask myself, why? Is it possible to get more information whats going on, before the smsc9xx halts? Kernel Debug mode? Please correct me if I'm totally wrong.

A small update from my side. Maybe I'm a bit hasty, but I updatet my pies kernel from 3.2.27+ to 3.6.11+ and no hanging yet. Uptime is about 12 hours. Usually my pi freezed within 2-6 hours when a F232RL device is plugged in. Looking at the kernels changelog shows that there were made changes to the smsc9xx. Perhaps this "long" uptime is just by happenstance. :? :)

Hi,
I also apply that patch but t doesn't fully solve the problem that is sometime I get only one toggle error and then running fine but generally I got also an infinite loop on toggle error.
The problem occurs only when there is a usb hub (raspberry integrated or external) as reported on my post http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 54#p290954.

How do I apply this patch?

Tried:

Code: Select all

$ sudo patch -p1 < raspberry_usb_otg_irq_loop.patch
can't find file to patch at input line 5
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?

Hello,

is there allready a fix for the FT232RL chip (I bought such a cheap one a few months ago from ebay)?
I've got it running now on win7 with aurora communicator and it works just great.

I want to transfer everything to my RPI (model B - 512Mb with wheezy on) to reduce the power consumption.

I read that you had to change the USB speed to 1.1 but how can you do that? (I know some debian but not much..)

Btw: what programs do you use for reading out the power-one inverter? Is there a linux alternative that makes the same log-files as the windows aurora communicator? (because I have some php pages that I created myself and they are based on the aurora communicator format)
Is it neccesary to run the program the whole day or can you create one file a day (I guess not because that's also not possible in windows)

Tonight I'll try (I installed everything yesterday but my inverter was allready down so I couldn't test it; though via "lsusb" the FTDI adapter was found without doing anything special)
Thanks in advance!

Did anyone bother to create a deb package with a kernel that fixes the FTDI issue?
I didn't compile a kernel myself in two years, and I guess many others having the issue would prefer to just apt-get install it.

There is no problem on R model (FT232RL), only on 'B' one (and 'A' ?) .
Anyway the problem as been solved by P33M see at http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 0&p=311249
New firmware is available on the last kernel on https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware

While communicating with the Vantage Pro station over USB and the FTDI breakout can be nice, it still adds the extra USB overhead which you don't really need. You may want to consider taking a step back and look at serial-line communication directly from the RPi to the VP console. It works fine, and although I haven't verified any numbers - it's my bet that not having to add another USB device will make an impact on the overall power budget, too. Over the last five months, the only downtime I've experienced has been caused by myself when I've upgraded the software on the RPi.

Sorry for a stupid question but exactly how can I apply this patch to my 3.6.11+ kernel?

Currently I'm forcing the USB to 1.1 using the "dwc_otg.speed=1" workaround but as said before it's not the best solution since it really hampers the speed so it would be great to have this fixed properly.

Re: FTDI USB Serial Hangs

Here is my solution to FTDI serial hangs:

1) Fast enough SD (slow SDs make RPI lose irqs) - I'm using a class4 microsd
2) BRANCH=next firmware
3) The following /boot/cmdline.txt

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~#apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get install rpi-update && BRANCH=next rpi-update
...

[email protected]:~# cat /boot/cmdline.txt
sdhci-bcm2708.enable_llm=1 sdhci-bcm2708.sync_after_dma=0 dwc_otg.fiq_enable=1 dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_enable=1 dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_mask=0x3 dwc_otg.microframe_schedule=1 console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait vm.min_free_kbytes=16384

Hi,

I'm fighting with a FTDI-serial cable in raspberry for several months and still having troubles with it

paolom65 : Last firmware from next branch, 4C SD card, your kernel parameters in cmdline.txt, but still the serialport hangs !!

What's the solution for that? I've to terminate with this problem cause my project is stopped thanks to this issue.

Today i'll try with arch linux, and otherwise i'll migrate to Beaglebone Black.

I need help with this, please.
