Solder an additional USB port to model A?

Thu Mar 07, 2013 2:57 am

Hi all,

I want to add one more USB port to Model A without using an external USB hub. My idea is to solder an additional USB port to the Model A board as indicated by the red arrow in the attached picture.

Will my idea work? Is any software change required?

Thanks

Ken

Sorry, no. It won't work. :(

Those pins aren't connected to anything on the board and the CPU only has one USB interface.

On the model B the CPU USB connects to the network chip, which also has a USB hub in it and provides connections for the twin USB socket. On the model A this chip is missing and the single socket is wired directly to the CPU instead.

No it won't work, the main difference between the B and the A is that the USB hub IC is missing off the model A so those pins aren't connected to anything. If you want two USB ports get a model B.
