What is the smallest screen that can use raspbian

Sun Jun 28, 2020 10:27 am

I'm asking just out of curiosity but what is the smallest possible display that raspbian can function on?

Does "none" qualify as smallest? I use several Pis with no screen at all.

As fanoush said, running Pi headless does not need any display, just eg. ssh into the Pi.

Working is fun if display size is at least 480x320, as with ths 3.5" display:

I use 2.2" 320x240 display with my raspcatbot. In situations when Wifi network access to the Pi3A+ does not work for some reason, the wireless keyboard dongle still allows to do some stuff in console mode, or for testing:

Same for me. None of my 3 Pis have screens.

Thank you, but I'm wondering if raspbian desktop can work on anything under an inch. Like a 0.96 oled display.

It can definitely output to a 0.96 oled display, my son did that years ago,
What do you mean with "can work"?
You will not be able to run a shell on such a tiny display.

I think I recall one of the engineers stating that they don't recommend any less than 800*480 resolution for the Raspberry Pi OS as it isn't optimised for anything below that and may result in things not fitting on the screen.

Physical dimensions mean nothing, you can have a 10mm screen, as long as it has sufficient resolution, it would work.
