Using CCD linear image sensor TCD1304AP with the Raspberry

I'm trying to construct a spectrophotometer and want to use a linear image sensor for detection. I was able to aquire a TCD1304AP for a few quid and was wondering if anybody knew if it was possible to use the raspberry pi to read out the data?

Hi,

Raspberries have only SPI, I2C and digital I/O ports usable efficiently for general purpose.
CCDs (this one, too) need high speed A/D converters. It also need a complicated analog frontend.
So, directly not possible to use it, you need to build an AD interface card even if you use with any other precessor, too.

Brekee12 is correct about the ADC.

However, you don't need to build your own card to use the TCD1304. I've written a firmware for ST Micro's nucleo F401RE card, which has an internal ADC fast enough for the job. The nucleo board can in turn be interfaced over SPI with the rpi.

I am very interested in your result. Both the CCD spectrometer and the Raman spectrometer. I would reproduce your results if this really can be built from 50$. Could you help me?
I also have a grating of 1200lines/mm 40x60mm. It is for exchange if you have some parts what you have overstock.

You can build the CCD module from scratch for around 50$ (I'd say even less if you already have the rpi or can get your hands on an rpi zero).

The cost of building a working Raman spectrometer is of course higher. How high depends on how good you want it to be. A used good laser would set you back around 300-400$, but you can probably get by with something less. The optics are not exactly cheap either.

There's lots of things to consider. Doing your homework before shopping will save you money. I've bought lots of parts that I ended up not needing..

I have the same situation with electronic parts. But hope I can do my homework so I am able to build one.
