The Canon EOS 700D is supported by gphoto / libgphoto2

http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libgphoto2-2-dev
Please post output of lsusb with camera in mass storage mode when plugged in

Is your camera in "USB media" mode or "USB MTP/PTP" mode? My Nikon wasn't recognised until I switched it to MTP/PTP mode.

The camera had no USB mode that i can find through the settings. On my mac it auto recognises without any mode selection... I may have missed it but i'm pretty certain there is no specific USB mode on the Canon camera...
Thank you for the response though
