B+ Camera is not detected (workaround available)

Thu Aug 07, 2014 11:38 pm

I moved a (Raspberry Pi) camera module from a working Raspberry Pi model B to a new B+. Software is current (3.12.26+ #702) on both B and B+ systems. Camera module is enabled using raspi-config (how do I confirm this?). Running raspistill -o click.jpg returns:

Code: Select all

mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)
mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)
mmal: Failed to create camera component
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly
Moved camera module back to its old model B home -- works fine (powering systems off, observing ESD precautions for each move, carefully seating ribbon cable). Moved to B+ again, along with the micro-SD card from the model B -- boot it up, and get the same failure, camera not detected. Rebooted with the B+ micro-SD again, same thing, camera not detected.

Tried on my second B+ with same results, camera not detected.

Running the diagnostic suggested for camera issues: (hostname is moander; bonus points if you recognize the SF story)

Code: Select all

16:14 [email protected] ~ $ vcgencmd get_mem arm
arm=384M
16:15 [email protected] ~ $ vcgencmd get_mem gpu
gpu=128M
16:15 [email protected] ~ $ free -h
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 373M 149M 224M 0B 13M 102M
-/+ buffers/cache: 33M 340M
Swap: 99M 0B 99M
16:15 [email protected] ~ $ raspistill -d
mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)
mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)
mmal: Failed to create camera component
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly
reboot and try again, no camera detected.

Moved the camera module to a B again, and it still works.

Yet it doesn't work on either of my Raspberry Pi B+ systems. Am I detecting a pattern here?

I'm stumped. Where do I go from here? I don't suspect power supply issues; using well filtered 5VDC 2A supplies that have run Model B + camera packages for months, and USB cables used for those systems so IR losses from the USB cables not suspected (but then again I haven't actually checked the voltage on the B+ board -- you took away my TP1 and TP2 test points and haven't given me schematics enough for me to put in new test points).

Many thanks -- most of the time my Raspberry Pi menagerie is very well behaved!

How weird! :?
On my B+ the camera works fine both before and after the very-latest rpi-update.
Camera module is enabled using raspi-config (how do I confirm this?)
vcgencmd get_camera

You can also use 'vcgencmd version' to get the exact version of the firmware.
(but then again I haven't actually checked the voltage on the B+ board -- you took away my TP1 and TP2 test points and haven't given me schematics enough for me to put in new test points)
As long as the red PWR led is lit solidly (and not off or flickering) then that indicates your voltage is fine.

thanks for the diagnostic tips --

Code: Select all

16:26 [email protected] ~ $ vcgencmd get_camera
supported=1 detected=0
18:37 [email protected] ~ $ vcgencmd version
Aug 6 2014 17:51:37
Copyright (c) 2012 Broadcom
version 3da89bd3cdef7980b684f48fe60944aff4502f50 (tainted) (release)
18:37 [email protected] ~ $
Other than being unclean (tainted), the camera is listed as supported but not detected. I'll check the connector again, but I'm pretty sure I know how to seat flex cables in these things...

The fact that it's not detected indicates that the i2c communication with the camera failed.

If you have wiringpi installed, what's the output of gpio readall?

Had the same issue with two B+. The issue appears when I'm enabling I2C support. By disabling it camera is working again. So check your /etc/modules file and disable any i2c module you may have, reboot and check. Must be a bug do you know where we can report it?

The camera's I2C port is reserved for videocore. So trying to fiddle with it from ARM, will cause problems. In a way, it's user error, since you're doing something you shouldn't be doing. But my vote is that it's actually a problem with the driver. It really shouldn't touch VC's I2C port at all. If it needs to be reported somewhere, I'm thinking it should be an issue on the raspberry pi linux github repo.

One problem with people jumping in on threads like this with "me too" is that it might not have anything at all to do with OP's problem. For example, in another thread, a guy had a bad power supply, which prevented the camera from working. Another guy jumped in claiming he has the same problem, but his power supply was fine, so the two issues were completly unrelated. The thread was somewhat difficult to follow as a result.

I'm thinking there should be a camera Troubleshooting/FAQ thread which gives you a checklist of things to run through before starting a camera support thread and what information you should provide when you do. Not sure that I know enough to do that though.

Rather than create a specific thread, you could simply add more info to http://www.raspberrypi.org/documentatio ... /camera.md ? ;)

Confirmed with my B+ and camera. If I comment-out "blacklist i2c-bcm2708" in /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf and reboot, then I get the same camera errors as described above. If I un-comment it again (so i2c-bcm2708 is blacklisted) and then reboot, then the camera works again. But as soon as I "sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708" then the camera stops working again. And "sudo rmmod i2c_bcm2708" doesn't 're-enable' the camera :(

So definitely seems to be a bug in the I2C driver when running on the Model B+. I'm sure there's probably many projects on the Model B that use both the camera and I2C (via I2C-1) at the same time?

Hm, it should be fixable on the firmware end as well. I am working on something else right now, but I could come back to the cameras if this turns out to be a common problem (which it may, by the sounds of it).

AndrewS, does the firmware version have any effect on it? For example, does the camera work with the pre-gpioman or pre-dualcam firmware?

Camera keeps working after "sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708" :!:

I'm afraid I don't have time to bisect in which versions it works / breaks, and I'm going to be away for the next few days (Pi-less).

.....
Hmmm, now I'm really confused!!! After the last test above I then did a regular rpi-update to get me back to the bleeding-edge firmware (followed by a reboot) which brought me back to

Code: Select all

And then the camera did still keep working after "sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708" ?! So I rebooted, and it still kept working after "sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708"! So then I did a power-off and physically removed and reconnected power, and this time after booting up (with no other changes to the previous test) it goes back to the camera not working after "sudo modprobe i2c_bcm2708" :?

Ah okay. If you have wiringpi installed, the gpio tool could be very handy here. I suspect that the camera isn't working because of the way the pins are set up when the i2c module loads. So gpio readall should be insightful.

On my older model B with the camera, I have blacklist entries:

Code: Select all

blacklist spi-bcm2708
blacklist i2c-bcm2708
Which is interesting as I have the AdaFruit PiTFT display running on that one, and IIRC it uses both I2C and SPI, and the camera works fine

The other B, the one I pulled the camera from, definitely has I2C in use, and has both the blacklist entries commented out, and the camera works fine on that one.

On my B+, when I comment out the blacklist lines:

Code: Select all

# blacklist spi and i2c by default (many users don't need them)

# blacklist spi-bcm2708
# blacklist i2c-bcm2708

and /etc/modules has: (the same /etc/modules file is used on all systems)

Code: Select all

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.
# Parameters can be specified after the module name.

snd-bcm2835

# k6rtm 2013/03/13
ipv6
i2c-bcm2708
i2c-dev
after rebooting, the camera still isn't detected.
And I'm off to work -- let me know what else to try!

IIRC PiTFT only uses SPI

I think I know what the problem is on the firmware side, but I'm not sure if it should be addressed there or in the i2c driver. Ah well, I'll play around with it on Monday.

I have just come across exactly the same problem. Camera fails to be detected when using i2c on a B+.

Pretty safe to call this one 100% confirmed then. Will get it sorted.

Look forward to a solution, and prior to that, any workarounds that don't involve the ritual sacrifice of small animals...

(thanks for working on this!)

Looking forward to a fix/workaround. I'm using the camera and a realtime clock that uses i2c. Or rather I'm not, because I can have one or the other!
