Camera broken :(

Fri May 17, 2013 1:51 pm

I was playing with the camera, moved it a bit and suddenly the red light keeps being on using raspistill with no image taken :( All that happens is that an empty jpeg file is created and the program hangs. The only way to get the light out is a reboot. raspivid same story, creates a 1 kB file.

Possibly it's the cable, which arrived with a knack because the white cardboard box was crushed inside the bubble envelope. See : http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 43&t=43980

Guess I'll have to contact Farnell.

What's the command line that you are using when it hangs using raspistill? Could it be being caused by one of the command line options that you are using rather than being a hardware issue? Just a thought.

No, I was just trying different things, as in shooting through the windows glass and comparing that with shooting through the open window. So I used the same line with arrow-up in Putty, only changing the image number. When I handled the camera to move it in front of the open window, just a few cm, it suddenly stopped working. I tried reinserting the ribbon cable to no avail. I already contacted Farnell and will get a replacement.

I had a problem with camera being not detected. Turned out that this small yellow connector for the camera to the breakout board was not properly inserted. A small push on it solved the issue...

Thanks, I checked it but it was fitted normally. The one minute my camera worked fine, after gently re positioning the cable it suddenly stopped working. Not much doubt it's the knack in the cable.

I presume you have reseated all the connectors?

Yes, of course. Here's the box and the cable:

Do you have the equipment to buzz out the cable to see if its still got all in connections in place?

I'm not sure what you mean?

But I already got a return form from Farnell and packed the camera for return. Will be picked up by UPS next week and I'll get another one. As you can see the cable is really smashed so I'd not trust it anyway. IMO the packaging should be changed to something more UPS-resistant :D

I also ordered one from RS (as I'll be sure to remove the lens of one of them) so we'll see who's first.

Anyone find a suitable spare/replacement ribbon cable for ordering ?

The existing one is way too long for me, and does look fragile so I'd like a spare.
