HQ Camera max cable length

Thu May 28, 2020 4:49 pm

Hi. I recently bought a HQ camera with a 6mm lens but for my desired application I need to connect the camera farther than 20 cm from the RPI. What is the maximum length the ribbon cable can have? My research said around 50 cm (18 inches)... Is there someone with a longer cable experience?

I currently use a 1m cable like this, works just fine.
If you need to get even longer extensions there are CSI to HDMI adapters, which uses a standard HDMI cable, which should work for several meters.

The official line you'll get is that MIPI CSI2 was designed for going a few centimetres across a PCB within a phone or tablet. The camera modules have passed EMC compliance with the supplied cables, and we have checked signal integrity at those distances under "normal" conditions (no MIG welders or other large sources of interference).
You may well find that it works at longer lengths, and some have reported 2m as working, but please don't complain if you get EMC issues or image corruption.

I am using 1m and 2m long flat ribbon cables with v1 and v2 cameras routinely without issues.
I have never removed the 20cm original HQ camera cable sofar (v1/v2 camera default length was 15cm).
But with normal tripod as below, or flexible feet tripod I was always able to place the camera where it was needed. Although for some positions it is not avoidable to have parts of tripod in recording, that was no problem for me until now:

On 1.5m cable I was getting random pink coloured bars over 50% of images: https://i.imgur.com/TlL8miH.jpg
On 75cm preview sometimes flashes pink for one frame but images are ok and this is what I use now. On default 20cm everything was good.

Mind you, I had 12V 2A power cable running in parallel to camera cable and it is possible it was interrupting data transfer.
