Pi Camera V2 on Pi4, super choppy video?

Sun Jan 19, 2020 4:09 am

Hi all, just got the Pi Camera V2 Noir.

ran:

Code: Select all

raspivid -t 30000 -w 1600 -h 1200 -o 1200.h264
and while it looked fine in the monitor during the recording, the end video was super choppy.
0.5s of 30fps goodness, then skips about a whole second, then another 0.5s of smooth video, then skips another whole second.
Lots of screen tearing throughout.

Is this normal? As in the Pi4 can't actually handle that high of a resolution/fps combo, or is something wrong?

Does 1920x1080 work ok?

The preview window has nothing to do with what gets recorded.
I did capture camera hardware sync pulses for [email protected]
The first 7 frames were before 200fps got set, and 6by9 confirmed that it is preview framerate.
Not sure what else is different for preview window than recorded video.

It was the same.
I just don't like 1080p on the pi cam because it seems to have a significant amount of sensor crop?
1600x1200 seems to be the closest to full-sensor readout that I've found at least.

My issue is now resolved though!
Playing the .h264 via VLC in Raspbian was the issue.
Pulling out the vid onto my windows machine and playing there worked fine.

Seems like the pi 4 can def handle encoding 30fps 1080p with no issues after all!

Yea! It seems whenever I capture a video, from command line or through motioneye, the first few seconds are super choppy, then fine after that.
