ZeroCam NightVision - Question about the IR led

Sun Jul 21, 2019 2:39 pm

I have bought a ZeroCam NightVision as seen on this page.

https://raspberrypi.dk/produkt/zerocam-nightvision/
I bought it to make a bird box camera for my dad and it is basically all set up.

The only thing i am wondering is if two IR led are to strong can i then remove one of them without damaging the ZeroCam NightVision?

I can see they are just attached with screws so its basically possible i just dont know what it will do to the ZeroCam NightVision if i do ?

Best regards and ty for reading

You could also put a sticker on one LED. That's somewhat less destructive.

They unbolt from the camera module.

And be aware that they are driven off the Pi's 3.3V rail, which is not designed for heavy additional loads. You may get odd brown out issues.

It's great to know they can unbolt from the camera.

So when saying that its can get odd brown out issues does that mean running it with 2 Leds might make it drop voltage or that it might instead do it with just 1 Led ?

Depending on the answer the simple solution seems to be to just put a sticker on one of the leds as Michiel O sujested.

Then im not taking the chance of breaking anything :D

Two years ago I did run into the same problems:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... p?t=182485

As 6by9 stated these IR leds should not get powered from Pi 3.3V rail, which they are when bolted to camera module.
I was successful with using only one of the IR leds, see below.

Be careful what else you connect to those screw holes, may lead to reboots:

It is better to power the IR leds separately, but then you can use much brighter IR leds.
I recently bought a cheap 48 IR leds light that even allows for "seeing through" black painted cables with Raspberry NoIR camera:

This has been a great help from all three of you.

I'll definetly make sure to remove one IR led so I don't pull to much power.

If all fares well I'll give the old man it tomorrow.
