Camera about 30 to 60 cm from the Pi board.

Sun Jul 21, 2019 10:02 am

I'd like to put a camera at the end of a small robotic arm. The arm will be controlled by a Raspberry Pi.

I've seen that the UCAM III uses serial comms so would be ideal (I don't need huge resolution or speed)

I've also seen that the standard Pi camera module has has a ribbon cable. Presumably the length of that ribbon cable is fixed, and probably would not like to be twisted and stretched many times...?

So, is there an interface for the UCAM ||| on the Raspberry Pi? Or some other solutions?

TIA

Welcome to the forum,

You can get longer / spare cables from SB Components but like all of these cables, they are really designed for fix positions rather than flexing around on an arm...

GITHUB has this Python program but the concern I have is the speed of data - is this going to be reactive enough for you?

How about putting a Pi Zero W (always need more Pi) on the arm directly connected to the camera and using WiFi to send the picture?

@fruitoftheloom,

Thank you for that - I’ll remember it for nesting season :D

There are several options available for a remote camera. There are DSI/CSI cables of various lengths up to 610mm or 24 inches and there are even connectors to join several together. As noted above there are even devices to convert the DSI/CSI ribbon to an HDMI ribbon.

A more complex option would be to have a Pi with camera close to the nest or area of interest and use an Ethernet cable connection to control the remote PI and camera. With Power Over Ethernet, POE, and a water proof case one could have the whole system protected. Also the Ethernet connection could be up to 100 meters while the ribbon or HDMI cables may have a much shorter range due to voltage drop.

I have camera flex cables in different lengths, 15cm original, 30cm, 100cm and 200cm.
For me the 1m and 2m cables work fine, see the 1m cable in photo below.
But keep in mind that 6by9 always argues that 15cm should be the maximum, otherwise signals on the cable might become unstable.

Thanks for the reply and photo.

I'm more worried by the ribbon cable breaking as the robot twists and turns. I think one of the other solutions proposed would be best adapted to my needs.

I did crazy things with camera flex cables without any issues. Here I did use it to connect Pi Zero on top of a cheap RC airplane with Raspberry v1 camera mounted on bottom. As you can see the cable is bended several times, and the airplane has seen many hard landings. I have not experienced any issue with that flex cable. I only killed two flex cables inhouse by a drone going wild, the fast rotating propellers are like knifes and can cut camera flex cables easily.

Thanks for the photo again, but the cable will repeatedly flexed all the time in the application I am thinking of...

If you have the space, then an HDMI cable using https://blog.tindie.com/2018/03/raspber ... extension/ may be more forgiving.
