Raspistill (MMAL) fails intermittently after 4-14-61 Upgrade

Mon Aug 13, 2018 6:45 am

After performing the usual apt-get update and upgrade on Friday August 10 Raspberry Pi 3b and PiCam V2 from 4-14-27 V7+ #1100 to 4-14-61 V7+ # 1133 Raspistill immediately gives MMAL error messages "'Failed to enable component ENOSPC' . Repowered the Pi 3 to clear the error but it repeats intermittently. It was necessary to return to 4-14-27 V7+ #1100 on a backup chip to return to proper raspitill operation.

That kernel version is not in the repo, so it cannot have been just a normal update / upgrade.
Looks like you got yourself into trouble by running rpi-update.

If you're lucky you may get yourself out of trouble again by running rpi-update again (there was a MMAL fix after the 4.14.61 bump; no idea if it fixes your problem)
If that does not work then you will have to revert to a working version, like the current stable version (4.14.52)

The sequence of events was:
Sudo apt-get update and upgrade
Crontab executes a raspistill job which failed
REMed out crontab command line and rebooted
Test raspistill command : raspistill -o junk.jpg gives mmal error and message to upgrade firmware
Sudo rpi-update to update firmware

So rpi-update was the problem, sorry but what firmware update command should I have executed ? I kept previous OS backup images so I’m running. This is a Astophotography application that I’ve had running for a few years with external lens, vignetting yes, tolerate yes, photoshop most of it out. Thanks for your help

For quite a while (years) this is done with packages in the RPF repository like raspberrypi-kernel, etc.
You should only use rpi-update when it can solve any specific problem or if you want to test the latest, unreleased versions.

Ok, confusing to some folks but after the first update/upgrade under the previous 4-14 the Rasbian message said to update the firmware which got me into 4-14-61 and this mess. Thanks for the info, I will erase those commands from my memory. :o))). Bill
