Two defective camera modules (version 2)?

Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:11 pm

Hello Everyone,

My version 1.3 camera works great and has since the day I got it, but I just bought a version 2 last week that produced a blurry image that was clearly not in focus. I found that at any distance it was out of focus, so suspecting it was faulty I bought a second one, which turned out to be worse!

As I understand it per this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=43&t=45122

I even got rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean the lenses and there was no change. So, did I really get two bad camera boards in a row? I've got 4 raspberry pi's, 4 camera cables, and 3 camera's, and clearly its only the 2 version 2's that produce the very blurry image. Is there anything I should consider regarding software?

For an example, see the attached photo of what should be a lamp in front of a mirror.

Thanks,
-Nate

Also, just an fyi, I've taken photos using the raspistill bash command and also with my own opencv applications using these libraries:

And the result is the same.

Send it back to the place you bought it from. Some of the early V2 cameras had a focusing problem.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered a 3rd, the first two are being mailed back tomorrow. I'm buying them off Amazon form a supplier "Raspberry Pi":

https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Pi-Cam ... B01ER2SKFS

Is that an official distributor? I read about the focusing issues but I thought that inventory should have been pulled by now.

I don't think the Raspberry Pi Foundation or Raspberry Pi (Trading) Ltd. are on ebay.com. It looks like someone is infringing their trademark and/or copyright.

It's actually Amazon, not Ebay, but either way I think you are right, somebody is is just using their name to appear as an official distributor.

I got my 3rd one and it is also bad. Clearly this vendor is sitting on an inventory of defective modules that were not pulled with the others. I'll be sending this one back as well and ordering one elsewhere. Maybe just a warning to others not to get their v2 boards off Amazon for a while.

No, It's not sold by Raspberry Pi, I think that is Amazon's way of also showing the 'maker' and collecting items together (a tag)
The seller is lower down when you select it.
