I'm still so amazed about the simple, but working solution ...
Another snapshot with better light:
Image

You can spot the mesh of the fences. The holes on the wheel of the car. Details on the trees and even in the grass. I'm sooooo satisfied now. :)

It looks a little less sharp in the center - compared to the edges, but still very fine to me. This is such a huge difference!
The hole in the card doesn't have to be very precise. It worked with a nearly quadratic shape for me.

If the lens is too loose, just holding it out pointing horizontal then tilting forwards or backwards can tilt the lens a fraction, depending on balance point.

The standard screw thread is not designed as an interference fit, might get 60-70% engagement and it could change with temperature. Molded plastic is sometimes better, but did you get a good one?
Injection mold dies change size with temperature, got one early in the batch, mid way or last one?

Focusing pointing up then looking at something pointing down, focus can/will change.
Using thread locking type stuff risks getting some on the sensor or lens.
Don't use permanent loctite:)

Best goop to use?

Koepi,

Wish my front/back yard was that pretty:)
Compared to your older V1 pics, it looks like it just needs a bit of colour tweaking now.

Even real expensive lens can have trouble on the edges.
One guy here has a $3000 lens that has a little bit of soft focus at the edges.
The wider the angle of view the more it is an issue.

How much lens correction can be done in the blob? it is only shading?

Another thing I noticed: The white balance now works a bit better, too. The image is a bit less reddish/yellow than before.

Hmm, interesting idea.
Print a PCB/module holder, pinch the tiny stepper motor from a DVD drive.
Gear teeth on the outside of the thingverse lens focus thing.
Autofocus lens.

Maybe tiny RC servo, they have 180 degree rotation.
For 10cm to infinity, 60 degree rotation? three to one reduction gear?

I can only recommend to dare the modification - it's simple and with just a little care you can't break anything.

I was impressed by the night shots before, but have a look at his picture ... a cyclist driving by, which can be seen as light stripe (4s shutter time). And the moon between the trees. And some stars. I'm honestly highly satisfied with the cam now:

Hi Koepi,
Great night shot, the greens are much better at night?
It is something I noticed, the V2 does seem to have good colour rendering at night.
Looks like I'm going to do some testing this weekend.
Noir should be even better at night because there is not much IR.
Thanks to caerandir, I'm going to swap a V1 Noir lens onto a V2.

Remember the v1 lens is only f/2.9 and the v2 lens at f/2.0 is a stop faster, hence better at night. Once it is in focus.

Good point about f.stop
I will grab my other V2 and pop off the IR filter.

Can I ask if anyone has had good results with refocusing the Pi NoIR v2.1 board? If I am not mistaken, the great images posted so far from caerandir, Koepi and bp2008 are all from the normal green-silkscreen v2.1 board, not the black-silkscreen NoIR board. I had already damaged both of my "normal" v2.1 boards before caerandir unveiled his clever lens refocus tool, leaving me with two NoIR boards that show the same thing: I can get good focus at the center of the image, but when I do the edges are very blurry (quite unlike the nice posted images). I am just wondering if there is a consistent optical difference between the two flavors of camera (for example, a side-effect of the missing IR filter) or did I just get unlucky?

Just unscrewed the lens from a normal V2 to see if I could get IR off.
Does not seem to be a IR blocker on the back of the lens, it is quite curved..
It actually looks like a square bit of film is over the sensor.
Have not pulled V1's apart to compare normal to Noir V1.

With the v1 cameras it was definitly a square bit of filter in front of the sensor, not part of the lens. Never pulled one apart myself, but there are several videos on youtube that show exactly that.

I'm testing my camera for text but I have a problem with both center and far edges being out of focus while an 'inner ring' is in focus.

Text is 5pt. Lens edge is 15cm from paper. Loop (x3) sits against the lens.
Capture
Setup
No loop

Is this because of the loop? Because in the no loop picture it seems there is also a varying degree of focus in the same areas so maybe it is the camera lens itself. Will I have consistent focus if I loosen the ring and focus it myself? Full frame focus isn't what I expect to get but at least a consistent center and midfield shouldn't be too much to ask.
Will I get better results with the 1.3 camera? I can get +100 1.3 cameras €25/each while the new 2.1 costs €32.

I don't understand who found it a good idea to 1) glue the thing 2) make it so dangerous to get it loose... Who wouldn't pay €5 extra if it had a sturdy adjustable focus or came with an adapter that opened it for easier 3rd party support.

Nobody expects professional pictures. But on the other end who expects a €30 module that out of the box takes fuzzy pictures in any real life setup. If you can pay €80 for a Canon ixus 160 with 20mp, autofocus, 28-224mm zoom, screen, battery and charger, then €30 surely should get a better camera module?

A magnifier lense will add to the sharpness issue.

When you loosen the lens you can refocus it in such a way that you get usable results for your purpose (if it worked that way with V1.3 lens before at least, I'm really unsure how the magnifier will influence the whole scenario.)

I'm new to this and am wondering why1080p video looks like a cropped sensor and has less FOV. I have been using 1600 x 1200 for my IP camera on the V2 camera the last few days which seems like the full frame view but obviously want to make sure I'm getting the most clear image possible. I realize the video resolution will be lower than the still capabilities. Still shots at look great at 3280 x 2464, btw, with no focus adjustments.

I measured 4.77mm for the inner diameter and 5.4mm for the notches.

Page 53 has the modes of v1 & v2
1080p has a partial field of view on both versions.

Thanks! That's a helpful read.

Now using 1620 x 1232 for my video resolution.

The very first post on this thread lists the modes too.

1080p is cropped in order to achieve 30fps. Full res 8MP can only run at 15fps.

Also please note that waveform80 has jumped the gun slightly with that list. The firmware update to give the full FOV 720p modes hasn't been pushed as yet. The list on the first post is correct at the present time.

It is just slightly loose (a bit too big) but it worked to easily crack the glue on a fresh v2.1 board. Nicely done, kaadesign.

Don't have a handy 3D printer :(
Made a wagon wheel drawing, 20mm dia, with 4 and 8mm circles.
Printed it onto laser transparency, wasted a lot
Made 12 cuts with a blade from 8mm to 4mm then cut out the 4mm middle hole.
This leaves 12 flexible fingers, stuck it to the back of a big washer.
It will do 3 notch V1's and 4 notch V2's
