B+ Camera not working

Sun Mar 01, 2015 3:10 pm

As many others, I get this error when trying to take a picture with my Pi:

pi@raspberrypi ~ $ raspistill -o image.jpg
mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)
mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)
mmal: Failed to create camera component
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly

The camera is enabled, I think I have enabled it like 30 times. And the LED is blinking red the first time I try to take a picture.

Using the B+

The Power supply is 5V /2,1A

I am running this release: uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.18.8+ #763 PREEMPT Sat Feb 28 18:24:36 GMT 2015 armv6l GNU/Linux

vcgencmd get_camera
supported=1 detected=0

I have:
- Double checked the cables.
- Re-seated the Sunny connector (twice)
- Reinstalled the Raspi OS twice.
- apt-get update / upgrade.
- sudo rpi-update

Some system detalis:

So now I am a abit unsure what to do.
Could it be faulty hardware.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you didn't ground yourself first, its likely to be that static electricity has damaged the camera (happened to me twice). Unfortunately, this means you will have to buy another and ground yourself before using it. You could try other possibilities posted on the (many) similar topics on this forum, but its likely to be static.

Is the ribbon cable in the right way round?

Hi Dougie, yes they are. I have checked both in the camera- and in the computer- end.

So I also think as ThomasS is writing that there must be something wrong with the hardware.
I used a wristband when attaching the camera - so I would think that i was grounded.

Thank you,
Jarle

There is without question some "bug" with rPI B+ and the camera module.
I have confirmed that my camera works perfectly on my rPI A, rPI B, but I get the same error that others are getting when trying to use it on my rPI B+ (same power supply, same sd card) the only difference is the rPI model.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~EXAMPLE ON B+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
pi@raspberrypi ~ $ raspistill -v -o test.jpg
raspistill Camera App v1.3.8
Width 2592, Height 1944, quality 85, filename test.jpg
Time delay 5000, Raw no
Thumbnail enabled Yes, width 64, height 48, quality 35
Link to latest frame enabled no
Full resolution preview No
Capture method : Single capture
Preview Yes, Full screen Yes
Preview window 0,0,1024,768
Opacity 255
Sharpness 0, Contrast 0, Brightness 50
Saturation 0, ISO 0, Video Stabilisation No, Exposure compensation 0
Exposure Mode 'auto', AWB Mode 'auto', Image Effect 'none'
Metering Mode 'average', Colour Effect Enabled No with U = 128, V = 128
Rotation 0, hflip No, vflip No
ROI x 0.000000, y 0.000000, w 1.000000 h 1.000000
Camera component done
Encoder component done
Starting component connection stage
Connecting camera preview port to video render.
Connecting camera stills port to encoder input port
Opening output file test.jpg
Enabling encoder output port
Starting capture 0
mmal: Received unexpected camera control callback event, 0x4f525245
~~~~~~~~~~END EXAMPLE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Would love to hear some opinions on what the issue might be with the rPI B+

Just to finish this tread.
I got a RMA camera today. And that worked.
So there were probably something wrong with the camera I tried first.
Thank you,

As I stated, my camera works perfectly with my rPI A+ and rPI B using the same power supply and SD card so an RMA "might" fix it but I am still convinced their is an undeclared bug with the camera module and the B+ (or at least some run of B+'s) There are just too many people having the same exact issues with the B+ but not the B

Is that based on fact or gut feeling?

Hi,

I am experiencing the exact same issue on my new PI 2 model B.
I installed and enabled my camera.
I grabbed the latest Noobs, and installed Rasbian.

Here is what I get:
$ raspistill -o cam.jpg
mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)
mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)
mmal: Failed to create camera component
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly

I moved the camera to my old Model B and this is what I got:
$ raspistill -v

raspistill Camera App v1.3.5

Width 2592, Height 1944, quality 85, filename (null)
Time delay 5000, Raw no
Thumbnail enabled Yes, width 64, height 48, quality 35
Link to latest frame enabled no
Full resolution preview No
Capture method : Single capture

Preview Yes, Full screen Yes
Preview window 0,0,1024,768
Opacity 255
Sharpness 0, Contrast 0, Brightness 50
Saturation 0, ISO 0, Video Stabilisation No, Exposure compensation 0
Exposure Mode 'auto', AWB Mode 'auto', Image Effect 'none'
Metering Mode 'average', Colour Effect Enabled No with U = 128, V = 128
Rotation 0, hflip No, vflip No
ROI x 0.000000, y 0.000000, w 1.000000 h 1.000000
Camera component done
Encoder component done
Starting component connection stage
Connecting camera preview port to video render.
Connecting camera stills port to encoder input port
Closing down
Close down completed, all components disconnected, disabled and destroyed

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, your my only hope!

Sincerely,

Dave

I know this thread has been started since Dec 22, 2015 and it's been 562 days :D

I encountered the same issue that's described here with my Raspberry Pi Zero W and Pi v2 camera. The weird thing is I have two Pi cameras and two Zero Ws, and the one that failed was on a more ideal condition. The one that's been subjected to extreme heat (and 1 week older as well) didn't have issues.

I opened the unit that had the "Failed to create camera component" issue, and it turns out it was due to GRAVITY. It slowly pulled the camera's attachment to the main Zero W's camera insertion section. I have probably broken the camera locks when I was doing the initial Zero W installation.

After I inserted it back, the camera was immediately recognized by the Pi Zero W. So same symptom but the issue doesn't necessarily mean it's a dead camera. It could be just GRAVITY doing it's thing :shock:
