Extending HQ Pi Cam

Sat Jul 24, 2021 10:22 pm

What would be the best extension to extend the camera cable too 100'+?

Electrical outlets can be installed along the way if necessary, and I don't care what type of cable it needs to be - it could be a tiny csi->HDMI or the camera board ( 2 or 4 layer depending on shielding if that would help ) itself could have a HDMI on it, or if there is schematic around I could build off of that (I could re-learn Eagle or learn KiCAD if necessary ). Hell, I could build a HDMI cable if I was led to the schematic of one. Ethernet to HDMI is not a problem either as I have all the tools to make Ethernet cables up to 6a.

I just need crystal clear 1080 up to 4k video (not going to a higher res due to cost ), and this would be for an inside setup, so temp will not be an issue and I don't use the heater in the winter ( PHX, AZ).

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Why not just stick a Pi there and use 1Gbs Ethernet?
Jeff Geerling is getting 2.5Gbs with CM4 solutions.
The CM4 maxes out at about 3.5Gbs.

A HDMI solution is possible, TV station cabling?
Won't be cheap.

CSI2 is designed for up to about 30cm. Anything more is chance as to whether it works. Some people have had it working at a couple of metres when using high quality HDMI leads and adapters (HDMI happens to have the right number of screened differential pairs), but nowhere near 100'.
IP is your best bet.

TV studios will generally use SDI, as a single coax is far easier to handle than the multiple differential pairs required for HDMI.

Many years ago make a system (industrial television) based on diskless stations and an rtsp streaming server (on Ubuntu 12.04 on both sides). Distance between cam and control center around 5 km.
Fiber optic was used as a backbone.

I saw some HDMI over fibre cables just yesterday.
Surprising cheap from a big electronics retailer/wholesaler.

but those expect a proper hdmi protocol, not CSI over an hdmi cable

Have not pulled one apart, but differential pairs to fibre then back again should be protocol independent?
HDMI over Ethernet cable?

It might not care what protocol is going over it but the voltages and signalling method are completely different so not compatible.

CSI and DSI also have a bus turn-around thing, where the direction of data flow changes

a dumb hdmi signal converter wont allow data to flow the other direction

100' is 3048cm, right? What about https://www.thinesolutions.com/cable-extension-kit ? https://thepihut.com/products/lan-cable ... -pi-camera or if you prefer DIY https://www.thine.co.jp/en/products/detail/THCV242.html

I've posted this one here in the past ( one of the first results if you google camera extender for pi ) I own one and can vouch for it's operation.
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/camer ... the-action
https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/deta ... 1/13883531
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/ ... SER101.pdf

Haven't tried with super long cables, but it states it can do 20M length.

This seems like a pretty good option. Don't mess with those HDMI options IMO. That or keep the Pi closer to the camera and just do your data processing/application over ethernet using traditional protocol to a different PC?

EDIT: looks like aBUGSworstnightmare beat me to it ;)
