Re: PiKrellCam: motion vector detect + OSD web interface

Please could someone post an update on where we are with pikrellcam and the new(ish) high quality camera? I have a working setup but I want to upgrade the optics. Is this the way to go?

Hi,

The Hi-Q camera works well. There are some preview buffer errors shown in the webpage if you have the frame rate over 25 fps but this doesn't seem to affect recordings.

I want to setup 'startup motion' as on when I install pikrellcam. I was going to write a script to edit the /.pikrellcam/pikrellcam.conf file on boot but this seems like an ugly workaround.

Is there a file I can edit to change this value before an installation? Alternatively is there a way to create a button on the webpage which would toggle the startup motion on and off ?

Many thanks,
Sam

I need to update the OS on the raspberry pi where picrellcam also is installed. What is the easiest way to make sure all my video recordings are transferred to the new memory card? Can I just copy the media folder and history is transferred to the new installation?

Quick help is very much appreciated.

Re: PiKrellCam: motion vector detect + OSD web interface- USB Flash Drive permission error

Tue Jun 22, 2021 6:49 pm

Hi all!
I posted this in the general troubleshooting forum, but I just found this. (I am also a pi beginner)

I'm having an issue with PikrellCam losing permission to save motion video to a flash drive that I've mounted.
I'm using the 3B board, HQ camera and NoIR cameras. My flash drive is a vfat.
Here's how I mounted the flash drive:

Code: Select all

 sudo mkdir -p /mnt/usb2
 sudo chown -R pi:pi /mnt/usb2
sudo nano /etc/fstab **** make specific to the UUID of the flash drive
 sudo umount /dev/sda1
sudo mount -a
This is what's in my fstab file:

Code: Select all

UUID=88B7-C034 /mnt/usb1 vfat defaults,auto,users,rw,nofail,noatime 0 0
This is how I changed the media_dir:

Code: Select all

 cd .pikrellcam
sudo nano pikrellcam.conf
/mt/usb2 (change the location in the media_dir line of pikrellcam.conf)

Here's the pirkellcam log:

Code: Select all

When I take the flashdrive out and plug it in to my computer, pikrellcam has automatically created the folders "videos" "loops" "stills", (etc.) but they're empty. Why does it have permission to edit the flashdrive in that way, but not to save videos to it?

when I type:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R pi:pi /mnt/usb2
I can't change ownership of any of the subfolders, and get an error that says "operation not permitted"

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??

Is there any way I can update the permissions? Why is this happening?
Also, how can I view what the permissions are for this flash drive?

Thank you for reading this lengthy post, and thanks for any help/advice you might have!

Will answer myself - easy to copy the media folder to the new installation and history is included.

Search for VFAT on the help page. You need to be using umask or dmask/fsmask in fstab.

Thanks so much for the help! I am a beginner, so I think I may be missing something pretty obvious, but:
I changed my fstab so that it looks like this (per the help page):

Code: Select all

UUID=88B7-C034 /mnt/usb2 vfat rw,user,umask=002  0 0
but I am still getting the permission denied errors when pikrellcam tries to create videos on the flashdrive. It is still able to create the subfolders, like "videos" "stills", (etc.) but still permission is denied to actually save videos to the location.

The first time I changed media_dir to this location (/mnt/usb2) it worked. Videos were saving to this flashdrive. But after I turned off the pi and turned it back on one time, I have been stuck in this permission problem.
