Original Cam vs Chinese knock-off - with OpenCV?

Thu May 17, 2018 6:02 am

Hi

I am trying to figure out whether there is any significant difference between an original RPi Camera Board and a Chinese knock-off - especially when it comes to the resources being used on the GPU/RPi for using the camera.

I plan to use a camera for OpenCV to do a simple check for presence and tracking of faces - then question is whether there would be any major difference between the original vs. the knock-off camera (or maybe it would be better to use an USB-webcam instead) ?

Regards
Brian

See camera feature comparison here:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... re/camera/

Search for "--mode" here on the seven (different) modes supported by each camera:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /camera.md

To my knowledge you cannot buy "the original v1 camera" anymore, only the China v1 clones.
v2 camera price is 25$, v1 clone price (on aliexpress) is 6$, for that reason I own 1 v2 and 7 v1s ;-)

Both cameras can go far beyond the official framerate maximum of 90fps.
v2 camera can do 640x480p180 with latest Raspbian Stretch raspivid.
v1 camera can do 640x64p665, v2 camera can do 640x128p667 (twice v1 speed) with raspiraw.
(Current) maximum for v2 camera is 640x75p1007(!): viewtopic.php?f=43&t=212518

OpenCV supports both cameras.

If the clone uses a different lens then colour and lens aberration distortion will not be corrected properly.
This is done by magic in the start_x.elf file and only the two official cameras are supported.
