Pre-Assembled

Sat Sep 22, 2012 6:41 am

I've seen a few places now where people are asking about pre-assembled gertboards.

I don't know if this is something that will ever happen, but in the meantime, having assembled my own yesterday in about 3 hours, I would be prepared to assemble a small number on the basis of a buy one give one for either a Pi or Gertboard kit, these give ones would then be donated to primary and secondary schools near me.

Any I do would be under the following understanding:
1. I'm not an expert at electronics or soldering, some might even say I'm not even good... I'll do my best but don't expect perfection
2. I'll do some basic testing of the assembled board to make sure it seems ok (e.g. LEDs, Switches), but would not be able to test everything
3. You place the orders, deal with suppliers, cover shipping, and onward packing and shipping.

If this would be of interest then post up or drop me a PM..

That seems like a fair offer considering how long it takes to assemble. I didn't time how long it took me, but I'd have said at least three hours. Mind you, I wanted mine to look good for the blog photos/vids

I hope those with solderophobia take you up on it. :D

Thanks :-)

Three hours is a guestimate, it took most of the morning but that did include coffee breaks, stopping to re-focus my eyes, and at one point hunting for the smd capacitor I dropped, doh!

You'll have it down to 2 hours in no-time :)

I think these offers are great but I think they'll work better at a local (say RaspberryJam) where the goods can be physically handed over (saving postage costs hassle) and maybe £30 is a bit much for the work?

Maybe £15 nearer the mark and once two have been done then another gertboard could be bought for a school? :)

I agree with local is easier, but that's not always an option.

That's the price of my time, besides I don't want to charge in cash. Feel free to do it for any amount you see fit, I'm not precious about anyone else doing it for whatever they see fit, you could do it gratis if you so chose ;)

Perhaps a better idea would be to partly assemble the kit, basically do the small SMD components and the LEDs as the IC sockets and pin headers are time consuming but simple conventional through-hole soldering.

Here's the thing. I found all that close work quite a strain on the eyes. I doubt if I would want to do a lot of it regularly, even though I enjoyed it. I have to wear a mask when soldering too as the flux fumes really irritate my throat. That makes it even more uncomfortable (get the violins out  ) I normally have a fan going to get the fumes away from me too, but no chance with those tiny surface mount components.

The last one I assembled took 54 minutes. But that was my eighth board and I don't have to unpack any bags. I have a cabinet with drawers full of Gertboard parts and a small box with all the SMD parts.

Nope,
but I still can't do them blind...
