XBMC display calibration as standalone utility

Currently, no matter what rejiggling of the config.txt file I try, any Linux distro I boot is impossibly hard to use as it squishes up my 1650x1050 monitor.
In contrast, Openelec has an amazing utility inside XBMC called display calibration where you can move the corners of the screen and set the rectangle in the middle as a square.
Does anyone know how they go about doing this? It would be an excellent package to have available for other systems and avoid fiddling endlessly and hopelessly with a text file.
