Power button that does a clean shutdown?

Sun Feb 08, 2015 2:54 am

What I want is to push power button and it does a clean power down of pi's system with an LED going out to signal it's safe to unplug. I also want that button, when pressed, to be able to boot the pi when pressed.

How do I do this?

Bonus points if I do not have to solder things to the pi itself so if/when a new one goes on sale years down the road I can pull and replace.

complete battery based solution here, may need to modify it some to get it to fit your case, it also includes an app that monitors the gpio pin to run shutdown, and cut its own power

Considering I'm still in design phase I can build around it.

I was looking for the same thing recently and the most promising I found for my needs was this:
http://lowpowerlab.com/atxraspi/

It can power an LED, which then pulses whilst the Pi is shutting down, finally going off when the power is killed.
They have a video demonstrating its usage.

I ordered some to try but haven't had a chance to put them together yet.
They have a few different configurations available, you get a small PCB with a few headers, etc to solder onto it depending on the configuration you need. I think you need 2 GPIO pins free to use it.

I will try to get around to testing it this week and report back.

Or you could build your own which is not that hard in the raspberry pi spirit.

I bought an external power button from these guys. I'm sure there are other similar buttons available. When you turn it off, the switch sends a command on the GPIO pins which runs a shutdown sequence, so it always does a clean shutdown every time - and then removes the power. Very clever. Works perfectly.

This http://www.msldigital.com/collections/all-products may be more than you want, but there is no soldering involved and it also gives you an ir sensor :D !
