Just for fun to see if it would work.
20W panel, lm317 regulator, Asus wl-167G wifi dongle.
It did.

You are not using any kind of battery!?

This means that when the panel will produce an amount of current (if you use Li-io batteries) below the threshold accepted by the regulator, the Rpi will shut down.

If you are using a battery which one is it ?

No battery in this set up, it's just a trial to find a suitable sized panel. The battery will probably be a sealed lead acid gel cell weight is not a consideration in this project.

What are you powering with it? Looks like two leads coming out?
Just wondering because my current set-up is a Pi with a 5V 3.5" lcd rearview camera screen and it would be handy to be able to run the whole thing off of it.

Would a solar-rechargable cellphone backup battery work?

The panel powers a 5.5v regulator (you can just make it out, small PCB lower right hand side of the photo) which in turn powers the RPi. You couldn't use this as is as your RPi would be rebooting every time a cloud came over. It needs a battery and that means it will also need a battery charge monitor, type depending on what battery technology you use.

Nice I have a similar setup with a 7Ah leisure battery and a 12w solar panel.
It will run for over a week before the night time cycles drain the battery. If we had a proper summer it might go for longer.
I have used the same setup on my beagleboard which lasts less time due to it being on wifi (no ethernet port on the original beagle)
