has anyone made a darts scorer ?

Tue Sep 16, 2014 4:46 pm

hi , i've just joined the forum, my name is jamie and i'm from scotland . i bought a raspberry pi for the kids recently as they said they where doing scratch programming at school . after looking it up i bought the raspberry pi. anyway long story short it never gets used and as my main hobby is playing darts i thought that one of these connected to an old lcd would make for a great darts scoreboard . i have no programming experience so i was wondering if anyone else has already made a darts scoring program that i could download ?

I've not made one for darts, but I've made similar programs before...

What kind of input do you have? mouse or keyboard? doesnt sound like a difficult project to get started with

my plan was if i can find the software is to mount an lcd tv near the board (possibly with perspex cover) with the raspberry pi attached , as for input i'd prefer to just have a numeric key pad but if that wasn't possible then a small wireless keyboard with track-pad. i know this to a lot of people would be a simple program to write , but i really have no clue . i have a scratch programming book and i will try and teach myself a little and see where i can go with that. there are quite a few programs out there for windows and a few for android so i'm not sure if these could be converted to run on a raspberry pi or not.

I'm not convinced that Scratch is the ideal language for drawing segmented concentric circles or even a couple of counters going from 501 down. That may be due to my bias against graphical programming languages.

If I were you I'd start by looking at some examples of python with pygame programs.

I'd agree it's a Python program.
It would be a good and simple first programming exercise if you used just the text screen and didn't bother with graphics.

Simple:
Allow entry of score totals for each player in turn and show remaining points.

Code: Select all

Player 1 has 204 remaining
Player 1 Enter score: _180_

Player 2 has 260 remaining
Player 2 enter score: _22_

Player 1 has 24 remaining
Player 1 Enter score: ____
Moderate:
Allow entry of individual dart scores

Code: Select all

Player 1 has 204 remaining
Dart 1: _T20_
Dart 2: _T20_
Dart 3: _T20_
Player 1 scores 180; 24 remaining

Player 2 has 260 remaining
Dart 1: _20_
Dart 2: _1__
Dart 3: _1__
Player 1 scores 22; 238 remaining

Player 1 has 24 remaining
Dart 1: ____
Tricky:
Show available finishing throws:

Code: Select all

Player 1 has 24 remaining, can finish with:
   Double 12
   12, Double 6
   4, Double 10
   Double 2, Double 10
  ...
  Dart 1: _12_
12 remaining, can finish with:
   Double 6
   6, Double 3
   2, Double 5
   Double 1, Double 5
  ...
Half the trick there would be pruning the list.

thanks for that i will look into them. i just had the books in the house for the kids and i don't really know anything about programming it could be a new learning experience though so that's good .

He's clearly showing us the product of a mis-spent youth. I've not played darts since upper sixth form (now called year 13) in 1981. Was never any good at it.

Next time i get an hour or two, I'll look at reworking my bowling score board.

Just checked darts rules, I'm assuming that you'll be able to add up the score yourself, and not enter invalid scores for finishing games (enter 000), though, I will put a warning against going under 0

that's great. you add the score of the 3 darts mentally then enter score hit , a score that goes below 0 stays as it was before dart/s were thrown . ty

You could even think about automatic scoring. Some idea here:

Hi, I've got it working, with a nice font, and blackboard type interface. 2 current bugs you should know about.

heres a nice download link

1-It will let you put in an impossible score, but theres no easy way to fix that.
2-5 player max limit on current version, but i intend to improve on that before bed...

instructions are simple. Just fire up python, telling it to run the file ("sudo python DartsScore.pyz" on command line, or right click it in X). When prompted enter number of players.
Finally, press enter on the number pad to enter a players score, type it in, and enter again.

Once I've improved it, I'll set up an image for you, so you can literally just plug and play

You're not checking for impossible checkouts.

This is true, I'm relying on the player's to deal with that one, as Im not counting each dart, just each round

--edit--
Dougie, did you pick that up from my instructions for use? or have you just been playing with the program?

PS
Its a bit of a dirty hack together of some of my other programs. FULL of bad practices, but does the job

Read the instructions? What instructions? I just grabbed the code and gave it a go.

You need to check whether a score is possible from [1..20][2..40 step by 2][3..60 step by 3][25,50]. For a checkout you can't use [1..19] as the last dart must be a double [2..40,50] (20 is an anomaly, as it has to be the double 10).
