MSI EEPROM Programmer

Fri Jun 27, 2014 4:02 am

So, my little brother bricked his motherboard while trying to update his BIOS (It even killed the recovery block) and I was considering attempting to flash a new BIOS to the eeprom using the Raspberry pi.

This board is an MSI and has a special parallel connector for programming the eeprom called a JSPI1 it's a 9 pin connector. More details can be found here:

I would like to attempt to use Flashrom in Raspbian to program this chip, however, I have never actually dabbled in the hardware side of the Raspi. GPIO is a complete mystery to me.

Can anyone offer some advice as to how I might go about this?

I'm not the first that I can see who's thought of this: ... 75&p=56630

No followup was ever given to that post, so I'm not sure if that was the correct approach.

Any guidance/suggestions would be much appreciated.

There is a discussion thread on

Writing and Reading From ATmega EEPROM ... om#p552397

which might give a starting point.
