Project: Raspberry Pi Car Navigator!

Tue Feb 25, 2014 2:29 pm

I've been working on this project for months because I don't have much time for it but it's coming out good. It's a bit uncomfortable to use but good.

Requirement:
  • Raspberry Pi
  • TFT LCD RCA/HDMI
  • 12v to 5v power supply converter
  • Bluetooth GPS Receiver
  • USB Bluetooth Adapter
Softwares used:
  • Raspbian
  • Navit compiled to support csv POI
So let's start from the beginning... First I used this:

to convert the 12v power wire that comes out behind the car radio.

Now I've found that it would be much easier and better looking using this

Image

so I can have a simple USB plug.

Then I used this TFT LCD monitor

but I've seen that there are also touchscreens to use with the Raspberry Pi.

The bluetooth GPS receiver is one of this

connected to the Raspberry PI using a usb bluetooth adapter like this

but there are also GPS receiver inside a USB dongle like this one and it would be easier:

At last, as the GPS navigation software, I'm using Navit. You can find it here and I successfully compiled it for the Raspberry Pi with the POI support using csv files. You can find the tutorial that I wrote here.

Comments? Advices? :D

Hi! It looks really nice! 2 questions:

Does the navigation software work properly?

How do you control the raspberry pi? I did not read anything about a keyboard or similar. I'm asking because I'm planning to imply this in my car as well!

Well, once you manage to set up Navit, it works ok! It's not the best navigation software but at least, it's the only one I found working for the RPi.

And yes, sorry, I forgot to talk about how I control it. As there's a USB bluetooth adapter, you could use it to connect a normal bluetooth mouse ;)

Or you could use a keyboard like this one.

You may want to check this: http://www.engineering-diy.blogspot.ro. This guy made a really good setup with quite good software. Not just navigation, but also media centre including FM radio.

Could this be used with non-touchscreen ? with a bluethooth mouse instead?

Hello out there,

I'm new to this forum. I hope this is the right place for my request.
I trying to set up the car mediacenter compiled by andrey but still without "any" sucess.
But that is just because I use the official raspberry pi 7" touch display. It is not working very well with kodi on raspbian.
I decided to try to install a carpc using osmc. So till now I've got the beseframe. Means the addons for a working car mediacenter are installed like navigation addon and the fm radio addon.
But now there is the point:
Is it possible to install Navit to osmc and start it automaticly like it is possible on raspian?
I really hope anybody can help me.

Hardware using:

- Raspberry Pi 2b
- Official RaspberryPi 7" Touchdisplay
- 32 GB SDHC Class 10

Software

- OSMC
- Navit (shoulf be installed but cannot start it)

If it is possible to get Navit working on OSMC that would be the much easier way to get an carpc software without dependency on a special type of display

Thanks for your help

Hi, I'm an mechanical engineering student and want to build this exact system to put onto a pedal bus. Could you be kind enough to email me the full tutorial (hardware wiring) and programming for this system? I've never worked on this system before so all help will be appreciated. And lastly would this be applicable in South Africa?
