Re: Reusing/Interfacing a Mini PCIe wifi Card

Tue Aug 30, 2011 8:32 pm

I have a spare 3945ABG MOW2.
Looking at PCIe cards pinout, I was wondering....

Could we reuse a Mini PCIe card using some GPIO pins?

That could save a usb port (connecting a usb wifi dongle that is) especially usefull for model A devices.

*** Guessing mode on***
Checking with PCI Express Mini Card Electromechanical Specification it seems -possibly- doable.
We need 3V3 and 1V5 power source which I guess we can pull from Rpi.
We also need a differential reference clock generator at 100MHz and four IO for the single transmit/receive lane.
Could there be any chance to simulate the clock signal using two GPIO pins?
USB D+ and D- are not needed as are used per implementation.
Auxialiary signals also not needed (for starters at least) and the such for Comm specific signals.

What do you think. Could it be done?

No. Signalling's a lot more complex than you're presuming it to be.

Hi guys, avoiding to open similar thread....

I haven't MiniPci-e card available for tests, obviously I don't mean to create a full MiniPci-e interface, but I've read there are reserved pins for USB on MiniPci-e interface (available working USB depends either from host and/or MiniPci-e board) so I suppose that's why I can't directly interface Raspberry to MiniPci-e device.

On some devices (Quectel modems on MiniPci-e form factor boards) there are both available serial port and USB on MiniPci-e pinout.
For this reason I suppose I can directly connect Quectel board to USB port of Raspberry (for a while don't take care about power supply and SIM interface).

My doubt is this: anyone already tried to do the same using a standard WiFi card with USB interface?
Thanks.
