Re: Slice of pi - GPIO breakout board

Thu Apr 26, 2012 12:03 pm

A lot of people (like myself) are still waiting to get there hands on an actual R-Pi, and there are people also waiting for the Gertboard.

For anyone lucky enough to all ready have a pi (or that just cant wait) and interested in playing with the GPIO's, I'd like to introduce the "Slice of Pi" from Ciseco plc.

This is a simple GPIO breakout board with prototyping area and an XBee style connector.

The Xbee style connector is great as it quickly allow people to get stuck in adding wireless sensors & projects straight onto the Pi via the Serial UART.

Most Xbee shaped devices like the XRF / XBee / RN-XV / XBT / RF-BEE etc run at 3.3v and so don't need any logic level conversion to use with the R-Pi

And of course XRF/XBee's have been used to talk to Arduino and other micros already so there is plenty of example code out there.

As soon as I get my R-Pi I'll be working on some examples using XRF's with various sensors and will try to post back here.

The Slice of Pi is already available to buy from the Ciseco web-store http://shop.ciseco.co.uk/slice-of-pi/

http://shop.ciseco.co.uk/slice-of-pi/ says:

At a special price of £3.14

Yet it's £3.25 ex VAT

Regardless, that's a nice bit of kit - could definitely come in handy!

Whoops, Spencer saw that in the description and has changed the advert. The price reflects we had to go to another PCB house as the first couldn't organise an itch in a flea pit.

it would be nice if it would not exceed the width of the RPi pcb.

But it seems its wider... , am I correct ?

The Slice of pi is 52.5mm x 36.5mm and so should stay just with in the size of the R-Pi.

Looks like my R-Pi is not going to be here for another 4 weeks so can't check for myself till then

Ok, that is ok, if will fit...

I like that board, because it will move the most important headers to the top of the Rpi

So I can do :

I assume the top connecters 1x8 are 8.5mm high ?

and the xbee connectors (1x10)  are 4.3 mm high ?

The RPi GPIO connector is not very well placed, I rather had that it would not be that far in the corner but a 2 - 3 mm towards the RCA connector.

I think I am going to redesign the back and add some extra space, so there is more room for this breakout board in the back.

Yeah I know, I also am waiting for a RPi... got end June now.. but I hope it will be sooner.

Can I already order a breakout board ?

Redesigned my case, made it longer so there is enough space behind the board, also the xbee connectors is now reachable

Power connector was a problem.. took some time...

But you can see the advantage of this breakout board, you get the gpio connectors on top of the case.... So fantastic for connecting a LDR or so

As prommised i"ve started doing some examples with the the Raspberry Pi and the Slice of Pi.

I"ve started with the old favourites LED"s and buttons

Here"s the Slice I used

And the post is on my blog
