Tech Demo

Fri Jul 05, 2013 10:35 pm

Hi all,

I wanted to share a video of how we're using the R-Pi as a base station for a GPS Tracking system: http://youtu.be/JOkks0oVsp8

This shows a customized desktop environment for the Raspberry Pi primarily based around Cairo-dock and XFWM4. It has several performance tweaks applied. It furthermore shows the i.AM GPS Mapper application and some of its features running on the Raspberry Pi. Care has been taken to allow best performance on this low power system, but not all optimizations are present in this demo. It also does not take advantage of Wayland/Weston (that's planned for when those become more stable), so everything is done on the CPU and no offloading to the GPU is done for now.

We've done a lot of work on optimizing the performance of the application (and R-Pi Desktop in general). We're also currently on Indiegogo: http://igg.me/p/424464/x/3476322. The goal is to end up with a turn key solution for GPS asset tracking based on the R-Pi and our trackers (one of the funding perks is a complete system).

Let me know what you think!

How did you get HW Acceleration for the desktop environment ?

All distros I've used are laggy and slideshows

It's not actually hardware accelerated. Just properly optimized and fine tuned. Hardware acceleration will come next...

We (WRD Systems, http://www.wrdsystems.co.uk) have a lot of experience optimizing software for low power systems like the Raspberry Pi. This experience has allowed us to develop a set of best practices which we apply to get the most performance out of a system as possible, discarding a whole bunch of clutter while still focusing on making the end result look good.

Some of those results are presented in the video.
