Re: Who's Interested In FM/DAB/DAB+ Radio? (Car RasPi?)

Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:37 pm

I"m not sure if anybody here will be interested in this but I thought I"d throw it out there to see if anybody bites.

I"ve just got back from Halford"s after purchasing a Philips DAB radio for £19.99 http://www.halfords.com/webapp.....yId_243051

Inside this radio is a Verona radio module from Frontier Silicon, the Verona appears to be a redesigned Venice 7 for anybody who"s aware of these radio modules and will run the same firmware as the Venice 7 but with a reduced footprint.

The PCB that the module is currently connected to is a simple PSU and amplifier, from this PCB I will be able to recover most of the parts needed to build a decent PSU for the Verona and the rest of the parts I have laying around anyway.

This is the Verona pinout in serial control mode

Pin Pin
3.3V 2 1 1.2V
0V 4 3 Audio Left
0V 6 5 Audio Right
CS 8 7 SCK
SI 10 9 SO
RESET 12 11 SPDIF
0V 14 13 -
- 16 15 RX
- 18 17 TX
- 20 19 -
0V 22 21 -
- 24 23 -
- 26 25 - As you can see, the hardware side of things is easy enough. It"s the software side of things that will have me struggling, does anybody fancy helping me out with this? I can provide a list of commands and even a windows program that will control this module if anybody is interested in this project.

Serial as in RS-232? I would be interested in helping with this project, but have no idea if i'd get the time to dedicate to it...

Yes, RS232.

I have used both MAX232 and FTDI chips to control the Venice 5 module, I still have a USB powered Venice5 that I use from time to time.

I have written RS-232 apps in C++ on windows, and in python it shouldn't be too hard at all. but what will be the best way of getting serial out of the RPi? a USB adapter? are there any that will work from a driver perspective?

provided these can be answered talking to it should be a piece of cake.

if you could post the serial protocol it'll give me/us an idea of how tricky it'll be. i can't imagine it would be that hard tho...

I'm pretty sure the module could be directly connected to the GPIO pins for serial communication, when I get hold of my RasPi I will design a PCB to go between the Verona and the RasPi.

All the software has to do is simulate button presses if we're using SerMMI firmware on the module, if we're using the stock fw then all the software has to do is send pulses to each of the GPIO pins to send the commands such as tune up, tune down, preset station 1, preset station 2, etc. I'm unsure how the radio text will work under stock fw though, possibly still through rs232?

For the SerMMI FW all the commands are single byte, you need to send the byte twice though (once to simulate button press, the second to simulate button release)

0x40 Power
0x41 Scan
0x42 Select
0x43 Seek Up
0x44 Seek Down
0x45 Volume Up
0x46 Volume Down
0x47 Menu
0x48 Display
0x49 Mute
0x4b Mode
0x4d Sleep
0x4f Alarm
0x54 .. 0x5e Presets 1 to 10

Let me know if you require more info.

Hmmm... if it's to go onto GPIO, then the whole RS-232 protocol would need to be implemented, not something i've done before. if it's been done already, then that would speed things up considerably.

However i'm not entirely sure (from a little googling myself) that it's RS-232 and not SPI (not the same thing) I'd be starting from scratch if it's SPI (I don't know anything about SPI...)

do you have a link to the windows app?

This radio has a Verona inside and it's only £9 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TECH.....933wt_1199

windows app

I'm awaiting delivery of the SerMMI fw which is what's needed to use this app with the Verona, when it arrives I could use teamviewer to allow you access to the module and software working together if that would help?  The module will be connected to a USB TTL adaptor.

This is definately RS232 and not SPI, SPI is used to flash the FW though.

After speaking with a friend, I believe using a USB adaptor will take some of the load off the CPU.

I will look into the various chips and their driver compatibility and decide what's best.

It's a small world.... This site and mp3car are places I hang out.

Nikk ,Think you may have posted on the mp3car thread. Are you Powerspring by any chance?

I also have an interest in putting a Venice 7/Verona unit in my car, currently to be controlled by a Android tablet front end. My initial intention was to have a microcontroller doing the direct control on the radio, and presenting an easier interface to the tablet.

Although with the relative low cost of RaspPi, I may just use one of those!

If we could find a 'cheap' display solution, the RaspPi could do it all.

In answer to your questions, the serMMI firmware is pretty easy to drive. It is a little awkward to process the scrolling text but not the end of the world. I thought I read somewhere that the GPIO has a UART Tx/Rx available on the pins. If so it should be a piece of cake.

When I get my Pi, I guess I'll find out!

I wanted to make something similar, but I bought "Si4735" that has got inside AM/FM RDS radio with analog/digital output.

But it works in I2C or SPI mode, so I need to make an adapter from USB.

I'm looking very interested about Raspberry about this...

I have been a member of mp3car for a while now but I'm not Powerspring.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/for.....rification - This thread has info on the GPIO pins.

I should have a working Verona module to show you guys later tonight, unless Dabbler already has something to show?

Good luck with that!  Let us know how it goes, funnily enough I was looking to implement sth similar, see also:

The serial MMI firmware uses a 115200 baud interface, you need to send keypress commands as Nikk states above.

0x40 Power
0x41 Scan
0x42 Select
0x43 Seek Up
0x44 Seek Down

...etc

Although it needs to be 0x42 ('Select' key press) 0x02 ('Select' key release)

i.e. key press x

key release x-0x40

The output is a direct representation of a 2 x 16 display, in the format

Top line          Bottom line

FF 01 10 02 <16 characters><16 characters>

Here's a little example for those that haven't seen it before.

Notice the scrolling of the second 16 characters, that the slightly painful bit of not being a true slave firmware.

Whether using a usb serial adaptor or the GPIO Uart, should be pretty easy to get something going.

It's taken me a while but here it is, YouTube was being a pain so I've just uploaded the video to a filesharing site.

The software was nothing to do with me, it was written by somebody else who also visit's here.  He might even pop in to say hello at some point?!

I'm working on a much smaller, surface mount PCB for the radio and I will release the artwork when it's ready if anybody is interested in the project.

Nice work Nikk. Is that the worlds smallest aerial I see there??

I'm working on my own PCB, so be interested to see yours.

would it be possible to connect this Venice 7 Board to Raspberry Pi

http://www.coolapplab.com/ultimate_comp ... nformation

OK the control software needs to be adapted to debian/linux but the board itself shuld be controled by usb

Looks like it has a USB serial.

Don't buy from this guy, he's a rip off merchant.

His boards fell apart (the surface mount caps literally fell off), that is for those people lucky enough to actually receive what they paid for. Also, his software was full of bugs that he didn't fix. I could slag this trader off all day long but I'll leave it there.

If anybody is interested in this project I have a Verona with the correct FW going spare.

Hi I wondered if you could re-upload that video?

Looks like a great project, where could I buy a Venice 7 from? Or is it a case of stripping it out of a radio?

thanks

I'll second the request for the video reupload. I'm interested in doing something similar, but the firmware looks to be the tricky part - not obvious how to get/flash the serialmmi firmware, and messing with the screen output using the standard master firmware looks... interesting (to someone of my limited electronics ability).
