Pi Guitar

Just got my a version pi today 
I have been asked to make a guitar that can record multiple layers and play them back while playing.
I hope someone else can decipher what I mean.
If any one has made this or knows how to do this with the pi your help would be appreciated
Might be a good crowd source project.
