In these times of Austerity it would be nice to save a little money & I have an idea that might help many other's like me
I run a very small home based business and have to go to the post office twice a day but need to know if i have a job that i need to rush back home to deal with, so i carry a Mobile phone to check my mail. This Costs money in the form of top ups all the time.
THE PROJECT IDEA
The Raspberry pi would check an Email Account & if there is an Email with Certain Keywords in the Subject it would activate a GPIO Controlled Relay that would Key up a Hacked PMR446 ( License Free Walkie Talkie ) & Transmit a musical tone sequence to another Walkie Talkie a person is carrying. Then the Raspberry pi would Deactivate the relay & Stop The Transmission.
I have found that the PMR446 Handsets can be Purchased for around £35 for a Pair & they can transmit around 5-7 Miles Depending on the Geography of the land.
I think this Project Would be of a Lot of use for People who need to be paged or Alerted to something that don't have a mobile or Mobile Phone Repeaters in range.
I am Comfortable with BBC Basic + Hacking the PMR 446 Radio to a Relay & the Audio input.
HELP
What i Need Help with is a Way to Check an Email Account for New Mail that Contains the Keywords in the Subject & Activate the appropriate BBC Basic Code to Drive The System.
I am Running Risc O/S on my Raspberry Pi (Model B) Rev 2.0 & would like to Use BBC Basic , But I am Open to Other Suggested ways of accomplishing the same end result, But i would prefer to use BBC BASIC as the heart of the project as this is what i understand & this will allow me to publish in better detail a web page that tells others who would like to try this project how to do it & credit those involved in the project.
I Believe that this project has 100's of uses : Bad Weather Alert System, Flood Alerting , Email Alerting / Site Paging System / Security Systems .............
The Beauty of a System like this is it's Overal Cost being Well under £100
Look forward to Peoples Pointers / Help or Advice.
