Using a Hitachi TX38D95VC1CAG 1400x1050 LCD. Possible?

Sun Mar 17, 2013 10:59 am

I've got an old Sony Vaio laptop that hasn't worked in years, although I believe the screen to be good. The screen is a Hitachi TX38D95VC1CAG running at 1400x1500. Several web sites I've found say that the interface is a 2-channel, 6-bit LVDS interface, and without knowing any better, I'll assume they're right. All I can tell you is that is has a 20-pin connector (presumably for the display data), and a 2-pin connector (presumably for the backlight).

Does any one know if it would be possible to drive this screen from any HDMI->LVDS converters available for the Pi (even if it does require another PSU)?

Searching on the forums here, I found the Chalkboard Electronics module (here), although the description for that states that it will drive an 18- or 24-bit interface, which doesn't sound like mine (if it is indeed a 6-bit interface).

I don't mind a bit of soldering, tinkering, etc... but if it's not possible at all, there's no point in me starting :-)

If it's not possible, I'll consign the laptop to the bin... it's been sitting in the bottom of my wardrobe since 2002 (along with a Toshiba and Acer laptop, although the screens on those are lower resolution, so not really worth thinking about, IMHO).

Thanks!

Dan

This ebay seller specializes in LVDS converter boards. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/njytouch/LCD-c ... 2982811018
I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !

Thanks for the information. I've got in touch to see if any of his boards would be suitable to drive the panel.

I hate seeing working hardware go to waste, so am hoping for the best!

Actually 6-bit LVDS is same as 18-bit. 6-bits for each R, G, B subpixel together give 18 bits per each pixel.

Hope that helps.

Too late... I threw the screens away after the ebay seller got back in touch to say he didn't have any modules that could drive them. I felt that without something out-of-the-box, it would be too complex and time-consuming for me to get something up and running.

Never mind :-)
