Use iPad as RPi Screen?

Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:35 pm

Hi there,

I was wondering if there is any way in which I can link my Raspberry Pi (wirelessly) to my iPad, and thus using my iPad as the monitor?

If there is a way, could you please tell me how (no complicated guides please, I'm really new to this!)

Will the touchscreen capability be maintained - and will this damage the RPi or iPad in any way?

Alternatively, if there is a wired way, I'd be happy to look at that too!

Thanks!
Regards,
Lukeeooo

The Pi will need to be a Hospot http://elinux.org/RPI-Wireless-Hotspot

The iPad will receive the Wireless signal from the Pi

You will need a VNC Server on the Pi http://elinux.org/RPi_VNC_Server

You will need a VNC Client on the iPad http://www.realvnc.com/products/ios

Lots of info has been posted in this forum.....

You will probably need to Jailbreak too which will break your warranty. Just make sure you know about how to un-brick an iPad and how to properly Jailbreak it. And don't send back the iPad while Jailbroken if it breaks. They will never repair a jailbroken device.

Hi

I use iSSH which allows you to use VNC on the iPad no need to jailbreak anything.

If you already have a home network where both applicances are connected, you don't need to set up RPi as a hotspot.

iTeleport is one of the best iPad VNC clients in my experience. You might also want to look into X11vnc for the VNC server, as that will allow you to VNC into display :0 instead of creating a new display just for the VNC. That way if you have it connected to a TV as well you can just use the iPad as a keyboard/touch controller.

I use Remoter VNC on my iPad and iPhone. The free version will do VNC. I have the fully paid up version which adds the capability for RDP, SSH and Telnet.

I think it is all a matter of personal taste. I tried a few clients and all of them have strange foibles that have to be overcome or just accepted. Remoter for example doesn't handle shift and shift-lock properly on the remote system. In the end however it was the one I preferred over all the others I tried.

Remoter VNC has recently been updated for ios7. There is no free version, it now costs £1.99. Dare I risk it :-). How much control does it give over the Raspberry Pi and vice versa.
I took up computing as a hobby when I retired in 1983. Cut my teeth on the old Beeb and BBC Basic, Treated myself to an iPad and wondered if I could capture the old days with Rasberry Pi loaded with RISC OS.
I find access to the iPad a little inhibited. Please treat me gently :-)

I plugged my RasPi into my home network. I set a fixed IP. I installed xrdp

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get xrdp
I installed an app on my iPad called iRDP. This allows a Remote Desktop session between your iPad and your RasPi. This shows the desktop from your Raspberry Pi.

I use another app called Mobile Admin to run SSH sessions on my RasPi.

These both only work inside my home WiFi network, they do not run if you try to use them from a remote location. I have not tried to run them adhoc either.
