Mobile Scanner Controller

Wed Feb 13, 2013 12:48 am

I have been using a scanner to capture images in the field, but its not very convenient carrying around a laptop everywhere, so my first idea for the Pi was to use it to run a LiDE scanner, which runs from usb, i am not sure wether the Pi could power the scanner, i would then want a small selection of bottons just to run a predefined scan resolution, and have the file saved automatically to the SD card, or maybe a flash drive connected via a hub, which may be the best way to power the scanner too, the hardware issue would be power i guess.

Programming wise this is all way above my head as i have no idea or experience with any programming, but could you guys let me know the plausibility of this idea.

Long term i may want to adapt it to run the LiDE hacked to make a simple scanner camera.

Check this out: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/3041 it's a single button scan to email solution on RPi.

You won't power a scanner from the Pi's USB, but there are plenty of discussions about powering various devices in the forums, search away.

What you're proposing is doable, and cool.
