World Community Grid: Not just yet

Thu Jan 31, 2013 4:38 pm

One project I was looking to try was running World Community Grid on my Pi when I set it up, but at this time the ARM architecture is not supported by their Linux projects. I know that there are other projects out there, it was just that I already run WCG on my laptop and tower, and was looking to expand it to my Pi in the future. Below is the question that I sent to their support team, as well as their response. I hope that this bit of information is able to help others in some way.

Problem Type: Question
Description: I know that the current versions of World Community Grid is compatible with the x86 and x86-64 architecture, but my question relates to ARM chipsets. There is a growing group of hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts who are running micro computers like the Raspberry Pi. As they are such low power systems and due to the roles in which they are being employed, such as in home theaters or as wireless print servers, they are very often left running constantly and are connected to a network or the Internet. My question is if there is any development currently in progress, or plans of future development, for a World Community Grid client for the ARM architecture. Thank you for any response you might give.

Response: Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We apologize for the delay in responding, but we have been busy implementing infrastructure upgrades.

Running on new technology requires specialized technical knowledge, plus the right kind of research project. World Community Grid is investigating the feasibility of providing a client for various types of new technology, including ARM and possibly Raspberry Pi.

We thank you very much for donating your unused computer power to help advance critical humanitarian research!
