Re: Using 250GB Sata via USB. Possible?

Hi all,  I am a fan of linux operating systems, I like the way you can play with it and make it do whatever you want it to within reason.

I do not think that 2 4 6 or even 32GB is enough space for a system that would be able to do unlimited amount of things.. As an video player, would you have a DVD/BlueRay Player attached to it possible not.  It would be easier to attach a dvd player to the tv.

But alas downloading films is becoming a choice for many and I have read that the pi could make an interesting internet ready television.  Only hdd space for the downloads could be a problem, powering the external hdd equally problematic as you would have a bunch of leads everywhere.

It would be nice to have the os run from the external hdd device on usb and only use the sdcard for firmware and boot (BIOS).

In this way the home folder can be as large as the remaining space of the external hdd you have installed onto.  Makes it easier for integration for /home/downloads folder.  And indeed any projects you may be working on.  Without too much fear that your going to run out of space very quickly.

You don't need to boot from USB to make /home be stored there, just mount it that way.

But you can if you want, at least everything except the kernel. Put the kernel on the SD card with the correct options stored in it to mount the rootfs from USB.

Mounting just about any size HDD with a USB enclosure will not be an issue.  Even loading from it will be no problem.  You will still need an SD card in the slot because that is where the SOC looks first from there you can pass business on to any mounted volume you wish.  This has been covered in may places... The FAQ linked on the nav bar at the top of the web page covers this, as does the FAQ sickey at the top of the Features and Requests forum, and the Wiki also covers this.
