Are there any clever packaging designers out there?

Would it be possible to design a safe and robust "case" for the Raspberry PI that could actually be built from part of the packaging for shipping to the end user? I'm not sure whether it will be shipped in plain bubble wrap, but if there's any cardboard involved could be retasked with some Blue Peter skills into a semi-permanent case?

Aah, at last someone comes up with that.

It would be very cool if the Raspberry Pi was shipped in a cardboard which could be transformed into a simple case...

Never mind, nobody made a seperate topic for it...

The cases thread contains so many pages.... its not hard too miss..

Still I think it can be one of the most simple and cost effective ways for a case.

It would be interesting to see what the education sector would think - there's no high voltages on the board, and it might give the students a feeling of ownership.

Also on the plus side - it would provide a important outlet for all those useful Word and Powerpoint skills that have been drilled into them in their current IT courses

To allow sales to the educational market, a certified case will probably be needed. And I doubt that that a do-it-yourself case can be certified.

However, this could be a great idea for the home-user market. To reduce postage costs, the overall size would have to be A5 if possible.

This could be a great PR opportunity. The foundation could open a competition to design the cardboard case. If this was publicised to schools and colleges, this would generate awareness to a new audience.

TV really sucked today, so I gave it a first shot…

All you need is A4 sized cardboard and a really sharp knife (cutting cardboard is a PITA). The only holes you'll have to make are for RCA and Audio, everything else is given by the shape. The case is pretty robust and there is no need to glue anything.

The picture shows the inside of the case. The RasPi will be "mounted" on the green part at the front, which will be folded onto the bottom to support the board in the middle and leave some space for the SD card slot on the left side. The right side of the board will be supported by the green ends at the right, once the case is closed.

If anyone is interested in adopting this solution I will make a refined version including measures once I have my first Ras-Pi.

edit: I do not take any responsibility for heat or fire damage

to myself: add opening for power supply and add green at the left as well.

Thanks Surpher! Great first shot.

My initial request would be to add a scale, so we know it prints the right size.

Like to see more similar PDF designs we can print and cut out from – something…

Plexiglass maybe.

My computer paper version is sitting next to my monitor now - I like that no adhesives needed. It will have to hold me until my Pi comes...

You can now get cardboard cases for external hard drives so why not for a Pi?
