5" HDMI Touchscreen

Mon Dec 31, 2012 10:45 am

Hello All,

Firstly, I originally posted this in the "What Periphials?" section of this forum, which I fear was an error. So, here it is:

I have been designing a TFT LCD module that will plug into the HDMI port on the RPi. It also has
touchscreen capabilities using an IC to go from 4-pin touch screen (2-pin X-Y positions) to SPI and another IC to go from SPI to HID USB.

I was wondering a couple of things...

[1]
  1. Would anyone else be interested in owning one of these? As with most things, the cost per unit
decreases as quantity goes up; so, should I make a Kickstarter project for this? The cost would be
    around 65.00 to 75.00 USD.
[2]
  • What additional features should it have? Forum member AwallinI suggested GPIO control to turn on/off the display; I can also add:
    • - Back-light control
    • - Extension of the GPIO pins
    • - Speakers
If you think any of these would be useful, or can think of something
    else, let me know.

Just reply with answers or contact me at : me@matthewcrumpler.com

P.S. I am planning my wedding to occur in May, so if I don't respond right away... please be patient.

I for one would be very interested in experimenting with one of these and would love to own one.

I would say do a Kickstarter - it's a good way of getting, essentially, 'pre-orders'.

I could see putting on of these on or in a wall, especially if it isn't much larger than it needs to be. That makes me wonder if speakers are a good idea unless optional; they may take up a bit much space. Even better if a little water dripping down the screen from wet fingers won't get inside to do any damage.

I am interested in this if you are still doing the project.

I am interested as long as you have the right programming done

Dear Mumiekage,

I´m interested in your project also.
Please allow some more questions:

I don´t understand what you mean if you say you are planning a 5" HDMI display.
# Are you manufacturer of this display?
# Did you found such a display and you are programming the driver?

# Do you have technical specifications?
(resolution, colors, voltage)

Is this display without cabinet available?

If you are planning speakers, please make it as option.
I´m interested in the pure display for now.

What is your timetable?
Do you have prototypes actually?

Thank you in advance

Curiosity question: Why go to SPI, then USB? Why not pipe the touchpad X-Y leads into an ADC and run it into the GPIO directly?

Not meaning to criticize. I'm curious if you are aware of a GPIO issue that I haven't forseen? Just trying to expand *my* knowledge of modern technology.
I'm only wearing black until they find something darker.

Using a trouchscreen controller rather than a raw ADC makes sense, there minimal no cost penalty it makes life a lot easier.

However since the linux kernal supports SPI trouch screen controllers and the Pi has an SPI interface the jump from SPI to USB seems a little pointless for the Pi, it adds cost and uses up a USB port in order to make the software side a little simpler (no need to install a kernal module and enable SPI).

The big plus in USB is that it means the display can be used on non-Pi devices.

I would buy one, but I'd prefer it if you could use that DSI connecter on the RPI. Speakers are a plus. You should make the frame holding the screen and speakers easy to snap onto the RPI so that is provides a sort of housing. It'd also be nice if you were able to combine all the power systems. Maybe have something like a micro usb port coming off of the power system of the screen and speakers so that you can power the RPI with the same source.

I'm looking for a 5" touchscreen for a Pi, so I would be very interested.

Please make sure it's easy to use!

Still considering a Kickstarter?

I would be very interested. Please let me know if it's a go! For what it's worth, while I like the idea of a touch screen, what I really need right now is a small but high-resolution monitor for a tiny computer. I'm teaching a class and a bunch of kids want to do this project http://blog.parts-people.com/2012/12/20 ... rpi-to-go/ but want a bigger monitor. I want the high res so we can read text -- VGA minimum, more would be nice.

I too would be interested in this project.

Kickstarter would be a good idea.

Keep us informed! =)

Thanks,

I would LOVE to buy one. I'm in UK, though. I have been looking for AGES for a 5 inch touchscreen! :D
I'm happy to help.
