Re: 7-10 inch touchable screen - what is best for r-pi?

Thu Jan 26, 2012 7:06 pm

Hello Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me on what type of touchscreen (7-9inch) should i look forward for r-pi to use as a tablet .

I've already searched in forum threats but, as sw guy i am, with few electronics experience, what kind of touchable screen should i seek or you recommend:

a) I've already looked for oled touchscreens, but most of them they are very small...2,3inch..

b) LCD touchable, is the best option? Do you recommend any manufacturer?

c) As far as i looked in posts, connecting an LCD part to r-pi hdmi is not friendly, LVDS problem...do i need a controler or i may need to build the driver?

Thanks in advance, i hope learn a lot here!

I was thinking a screen from an eee pc or something but would require some extra electronics to interface it correctly

You'll need an external, powered via alternate source than the RPi itself, USB hub, but this is one of the best you can buy.

Looked into this myself - your easiest bet would be a kit aimed at Digital Signage like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-To.....35b88f201e

As you can see its a 7" Touchscreen display with the older resistive style pressure overlay but its got an HDMI - the main problem is there's no HDMI input so it would have to be the poorer composite connection.

Another option is to strip this badboy down - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lill.....601wt_1037 and simply attach a touchscreen over the top of it - resistive touchscreens are the most common and cheapest but capacitive ones are much more expensive like this one...

Basically it all depends on price and what your wanting to use it for.

Found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Capaci.....3a6f5d7464

A 10.1" capacitive multi-touch touchscreen "kit", pair that with a 10.1" lvds lcd from a netbook and you should be off and running.  Replacement lcd screens for netbooks shouldn't be that much money.  I think the bigger problem is the lvds connector.

There's multiple places to find capacitive touchscreen kits out there.

Thanks George, in fact it is a very good option. Although it may some hacking about the lvds, and only has win drivers, it seems to me the best option related with price/tech spec. The manufacturer is the http://www.visualtouchworld.com/
