Power off the phone line

Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:04 pm

This is probably a bit naughty and apologies if anyone has posted this idea before but I was wondering about powering a pi off of a landline phone line. Dealextreme sell a lamp that uses this source for power, would it be possible, sensible and useful to power a pi in the same way? Note I didn't ask if it was moral but, based on very little technical understanding, it would seem a way to get a stable and reliable source of power.

I believe there will only be a few 10s of milliamps available at something like 50 volts. Not enough to power a Pi unless you pay line rental on a dozen lines or so.

Short answer no.
The current limit is less then 40ma.
You would have to use capacitors to hold the charge and the Pi would drain them to quickly.

Not to mention the 90 vac @ 30 cps ring current.
It would not be a healthy to feed an RPi that diet.
