Yes you can use a SIM800 module.
There are many of these modules in different packaging versions. ( one example: https://www.waveshare.com/sim800c-gsm-gprs-hat.htm )
And the documentation from where you buy it should tell you how to connect it to he Pi. ( example again: https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/SIM800C_GSM/GPRS_HAT )
The normal way of communicating with these modems are via sending "AT" commands over the communication port ( usually serialport ) where you can check if you have received any SMS and then receive the text from them.
